iPhone Guru's Need Help
Hi All,
Son's iPhone 5S has just gone into BSOD and he's connected it to his laptop to restore it but will lose all his contacts and info on the phone. Is there a way to restore the phone and keep all his business contacts? Kid is just 18 and running a couple of businesses and keeps all his stuff on his phone. I've told him numerous times to write important stuff down but I get the 'don't need to, 'technology'old man' thing. Thanks Scott |
Not an Iphone guy, but doesn't it all sync to the cloud?
I had to wipe and restore wife's 4S, she got everything back including pics. She had the sync to cloud option turned on. |
Press and hold power and circle buttons for 15 seconds to force a reset.

He should do nothing until he can get a backup.
Start with the force resets. If the phone boots normally obviously do a back up immediately. If the phone boots but you get no display try plugging into laptop and see if iTunes sees it. If yes try a backup. His stuff may be backed up to the iCloud if he enabled it on set up, he should check that. Good luck, hopefully the lesson is not too painful. |
I know I sync information when I plug in to iTunes, and I think restoring from the last backup is pretty simple.
Never heard of a BSOD on an iPhone. There are a lot of counterfeit Apple products out there. Hopefully your son's isn't one of them. |
What was he expecting to do if he lost his phone? Backup to iCloud from now on.
|
I've never connected my iPhone to my laptop - why would you need to do that?
iCloud to backup all phone settings. Lose phone/buy new phone? It clones perfectly and you have a new phone running in minutes. Couldn't be easier. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1403968243.jpg |
I refuse to use the icloud storage.
When the sales droid wanted to back my stuff up to icloud when I upgraded from my 3gs to a 4, I asked if I could encrypt it. He said there is a check box. I said "No, can *I* encrypt it?" Nope. So why bother then. And putting stuff like that Out There where *you* can't control the encryption is a hazzard. FWIW I won't be getting another apple phone. I'd rather get an Android, put a pure Android distro on it, and have something more like full control. |

We have several iPad's here at work and they sometimes lock up but never seen a BSOD. Ack! The non believer has spoken blasphemy! Apple products are infallible! Hunt him down! Hunt him down and beat him with iPads! |
Phone will usually sync when connected to itines automatically
|
I don't use itunes. Other option is my email/calender/contacts sync & update with my google account.

Sorry... tech humor... which in and of itself is an oxymoron. |
iTunes is actually excellent if you take the time to learn all the settings and configure it properly. It's not as immediately intuitive as a lot of the apple stuff but if you learn it, it's quite robust and works very well.
Very unusual for an iPhone to just stop working - was he trying to jailbreak it or something? |

If I had anything sensitive I wouldn't trust either of them. ;) |
On that note I can't think of a single thing on my phone that I would not trust being in the cloud. Contacts, email, pictures. What ev.
