Anyone have a fallout shelter?
 

I saw this ad in Misc Photos. Surely with all the people here, someone has one on their property or grew up in a place with one? Or, did they just sell advertising and people not actually buy them?

I visited a friend Vidalia, GA long ago. Her grandma lived in an old house. In the family room, they told me if you moved some of the junk, they panel would move and your could get into the fallout shelter that was under the yard. I should have pushed a little harder to see it.

I don't think it would work around here. Well, fine until high tide.

If I lived in the US in the hurricane belt, I'd build a multipurpose one in a heartbeat and let the storm blow over the top.

We had a neighbor with one growing up in Norfolk. Now whenever anyone mentions one I think of "The Shelter"......

This is what I think of when I think of fallout shelters!

There was one in the news recently where the home owners where curious about the entrance to the shelter for almost 10 years but never investigated until now. It had been flooded out but there was sealed containers with a bunch of stuff from the 60's or maybe even 50's. They donated it all to some museum.

I don't think I could have waited that long to check something out in my yard.

No old baseball cards or stock certificates for companies with funny fruit names?

OK, I can't remember my kid' names but somehow I was able to remember where I had Thanksgiving dinner 19 years ago. I've been there once and found it on google maps. The bump at the base of the chimney was where the entrance was said to be.

One of my customers has one. Their home was built during the cold war era.
They were not aware of it until they had drainage problems, and found it when they were digging for french drains.

I have a friend who's father had one built in the backyard here in Tampa in the early 60's. She said he stocked it with food and he had a revolver. She said it was not for defense but to use on themselves if needed. They guy was a pretty well respected doctor.

My father told me during the Cuban missile crisis he knew of several people that build them. Other families just picked up and moved. It was pretty serious stuff in Florida during that time.

When I say something stupid, and my wife goes nuclear, I head for my fallout shelter. It also called 'the garage'.

If I moved into a house with a shelter, I would probably check it out within a day or no more than a week of moving into the house.

My parents actually built one near Boston. It was a RR tanker buried 20 feet underground. It had a 3 foot wide tunnel you could slide down. We had hours of fun sliding down it. It had an air purifying system and a wasteleach bed system. But only a 55 gallon water tank. Not too well thought out for my Dad, an MIT nuclear engineering professor.

In a hurricane it would probably flood and a person would drown in there. Did you mean tornado?
