Mr. Zamperini, Unbroken Still
Like most, I had no knowledge of Mr. Zamperini prior to the novel, "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand.
A most remarkable book about an incredible journey. I have read the book many times. RIP, Sir. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/04/arts/louis-zamperini-olympian-war-survivor-unbroken-dies.html?_r=1 |

RIP Mr. Zamperini |
RIP. I've been meaning to read the book one of these days. Flown a few times in and out of Zamperini field (KTOA)

The sh&t he endured, the strength of his character, the humbleness of his being.
Perhaps we, as a society worship the wrong people. Athletes are not courageous nor heroic, they just play a game. People that serve are the TRUE heroes. Matt |
Amen Matt....well said.

Louis' older brother Pete was my high school baseball coach in the 60s. Louis would occasionally come by the school to hang out with Pete. It was over a couple years before I knew what Louis had done and mostly it was about being in the Olympics. When I was a senior I would hear that Louis was in the gym talking and I would sneak out of class to go listen to his incredible stories.
One of the Greatest of the Greatest Generation! RIP......Louis and Pete http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1404442981.jpg |
They don't call them the Greatest Generation for nothing. RIP, Mr. Zamperini.

Unbroken was a great book about a truly outstanding American. Inspirational seems too small a word.
A film version of the book is now being edited. I hope, but am not confident, it does his story justice. To quote the inimitable Wayne Campbell, "We're not worthy"... 1936 as freshman at USC, prior to running in Olympics at Berlin: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/...63_634x497.jpg Lockheed, 1940: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/...74_634x469.jpg Home, 1945, with fellow Japanese POW Fred Garrett: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/...79_634x547.jpg Lifelong marriage, 1946: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/...57_634x638.jpg 2014: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/...38_634x429.jpg Rest in Peace, and thank you Louis. |

I'm lucky that I have a job that I can listen to audio books all day. I think I've "read" Unbroken about 3 times now. The first time around, I noticed I was stunned, and not working, while listening to some of the things he endured, and overcame. The thing I came away with, was that I have NOTHING to ***** about. Ever. Mr. Zamperini, may you Rest In Peace, and know that you are truly an inspiration in my life.
