Put your money into real estate.

Don't get married.

Work hard.

I followed two of the three, but it failed to cover the cost of the third.

Buy stocks in Google, Microsoft and Apple when they first go public. Don't sell them until 2014 then get a new 918 and retire!

interesting the folks who took this thread as a "how can i back to the future part 2 style make as much money as possible?" and the folks who took this as "mistakes we recognize now in our youth and would fix?"

And Subaru stock if you are in the late 70s/early 80s. $5k would have gotten you enough to retire a few years later. Combine that with Yahoo and sell 2000ish and Google/Apple/M$.

Also, screw college and get into an explosives company. Good money for the business owner, even in a small town.

No complaints about marriage, almost 12 great years. But I do think a stint in the military would have been beneficial for my stupid young ass.

Get over the facts that you've always wanted a Porsche and you have disdain for cast iron V8s, sell the rusted out 356 and buy that $5000 Cobra!

If you could go back and give your 18yr old self $ advice...
The real question is, how many of your 18 year old selves would have actually listened?

I was always very careful with saving and investing money, even before that I had over a grand invested in stocks. That wasn't easy to do making $2.35 an hour.

But beyond being careful with money I'm not sure how much other advice i would have been receptive to back then, being a teenage knowitall.

They don't get served up much easier than that ......

Nostatic hit it. And yeah, student loans at 8% are crippling. But it looks like th gov is going to forgive them, so maybe not such a bad deal.

I think I'm just a few months older than you Sammy... 2.35/hr....that would've been when we were 16 back in '76 . At 18 (hell, even at 23 upon graduating college), I was paying for "essentials" (i.e cars, etc.) and had nothing "extra" for investing, etc. But....I did know how to "save" and "live within my means" as had been instilled by my parents. Best advices I can offer for an 18 y/o from my perspective....avoid "debt" like the plague (i.e. CC debt) and live within your means.
