outboard motor gauges - need help/opinions

Two weeks ago I purchased a 1996 17 ' Hydra Sports center console boat with a 1989 Yamaha 90 hp two stroke outboard. Motor runs fine no problems there. The console has two main gauges which consist of a tach and speedometer. These are multi-function LED ? gauges so by pushing a " mode " button you can see fuel level, temp., trim, voltage etc. you get the idea. The seller told me the speedometer didn't work which I assumed meant the speedo portion didn't work but the other functions did that may have been a mistake on my part. I can't get any of the functions of the speedometer to work the only thing that works is the backlight. The other gauge the tach it does work but the LED portion is very sun faded and barely legible. The trim gauge portion of the tach works but that's it none of the other functions work. This weekend I'm going to crawl under the console and check all connections, fuses to make sure nothing obvious. Battery is fully charged it spins the outboard very well so that's not the issue. So if I decide to replace the two gauges they are $225.00 - $300.00 each. I have to look at the wiring to see if it is Yamaha gauge specific, the boat was an OMC product so I would have thought it originally would have come with OMC outboard/gauges. So buy the two new gauges and be done with it ? Or buy aftermarket individual gauges and figure out the wiring ?

check at The Hull Truth - Boating and Fishing Forum

Go to the SIM Yamaha forum. SIM is a top notch Yamaha parts vendor and the owner knows his stuff.

that said no way I'd drop that sort of cash on the old yammie round gauges.

Not sure what a yammie of that vintage would be able to send to the gauges but I personally rely on fuel level (to an extent), voltage and RPM's. Everything else is either better served elsewhere (gps for speed) or not terribly important.

I believe we all make mistakes but I will not validate your poor choices and/or perversions and subsidize the results your actions.
