Why won't videos play on my Macbook?

At least not worth a **** lately. Youtube, news videos, you name it. I have a pretty fast cable internet connection. I have what I believe is the latest Flash player and quicktime. Anyone? TIA.

karma for talking on your cell phone while driving?

:D
fwiw youtube sometimes becomes unusable for me. I think it is on their side, not mine. When in doubt, reboot.

craigster59 07-17-2014 05:27 PM

Oh snap! (Do people still say that?)

I use a MacBook and my videos work well. What OS?

rusnak 07-17-2014 05:41 PM

Just took a look at mine. OSX 10.9.3 Everything works fine. I haven't updated to 10.9.4 yet.

Scott R 07-17-2014 06:03 PM

Have you tried a different browser?

Scott R 07-17-2014 06:10 PM

Also from a command terminal can you run "top" and post the results?

This is from mine:

Zap your pram

Some troubleshooting questions:
- Did they used to play on yours? If so what changed to make them stop? If any updates/patches/browser fixes/etc were dome then can they be undone?
- Do they play on another computer at the same place they do not play on yours? If they don't then it is probably an ISP issue?
- Can you play a video from local hard drive and/or DVD? Could be a video system malfunction?

Gogar 07-17-2014 07:13 PM

Denis,

Try to do a software update and see if anything comes up.

I had the same problem (MacBook Pro 2011ish) and did a software update last night and it's a lot better now. YouTube and Netflix, etc.

Before that it sucked for about 3 weeks or so lately. I never tried to sort it out really though.

stomachmonkey 07-17-2014 08:08 PM

Pretty much all youtube content and other providers have converted their catalogs to h264 so you could remove Flash all together and you'd likely not miss a thing.

The Macbook I'm typing this on is Flash free and no issues.

Something went corrupt.

Probably a Quicktime component.

Quicktime is more than just an app that plays stuff.

Quicktime is a rendering engine that is used system wide.

Hi the App Store icon and see what updates need applying.

Test your bandwidth too. Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test is a good one

vash 07-17-2014 09:39 PM

what kinda "videos"? :D

speeder 07-17-2014 09:58 PM

Thanks all! It was just a youtube video that would not play, (it's fine now), probably too many people trying to watch it at once. But I've had other weird problems with videos like it plays fine for the first half or so of a 5 minute clip and then the picture freezes but the audio continues like nothing happened...odd.

berettafan 07-18-2014 04:40 AM

Did you ask the Panerra people if their wireless service was having trouble?

livi 07-18-2014 08:23 AM

You have to disable the porn screen filter.

Gogar 07-18-2014 08:56 AM

Maybe the wireless at the nail salon just isn't very fast.
