Karma And The Hoon
 

I don't often laugh at the misfortune of others, but last night I admit I had a good one.
A few miles east of my home, there was evidence of Hooning, a pair of long black tire marks and a good dose of karma at the end. I might have mis-interpreted the marks, but here is what I saw.
A couple of car-lengths east of a driveway of a fellow I know the marks started in a small "fish hook". I suspect the driver backed out on to the road and nailed it in drive while the car was still rolling back. There was an interruption in the marks, I suspect the transmission found second about there . Then things got interesting.
After about 20 yards in second, the marks were trending toward the ditch on the right, then angled across the centre line. The driver (with their foot still well and truely into the throttle) corrected and the marks headed back to the right. The black marks ended about half the width of the lane from the ditch, to be replaced with brief brake marks which ended in the ditch itself.
I can't imagine the driver called the police but if there was an officcer on the scene it would probably be listed as "Stunting", which gets expensive around here.
Don't really know who was the driver, but a certain Fox-body Mustang is among the prime candidates.
Some people shouldn't drive cars with more horsepower than they have IQ points.

There is a lot of hooning on the rural roads around here. Every once in awhile you'll see the results of stunting gone wrong, usually with a few pieces of the car left as a token of too many beers and not enough skill.

Makes me smile.

Oh I didn't have to look it up, it was just easier to explain that way. I have a 27 year old son with a couple of volvos running 30lbs of boost, I am well versed in "hooning"

Back in my day we called that the "reverse to drive slam".

1) More power than brains. Agreed. Makes me smile.

Only used the reverse to first technique when the car didn't have enough power to burn out from a standing start.

And I learned a new word today....dam I'm hip! (or whatever the kids these days say!!!;))

What amazed me, in hindsight, was how well the family station wagon held up to that abuse.........

They put turbo 400 trannies in a LOT of station wagons. Friend of mine got a drivetrain out of a one for his Vega, that he crashed. Then it went into an old FJ Toyota that landed shiny side down more than once. That thing was a beast, and it had a sweet winch on it...

Reading some of the replies reminded me of the mis-adventures of a class mate in high school who borrowed daddy's car one evening to "go in to town". When he tried the reverse-to-drive trick on main street to impress his friends, the transmission packed it in. That left him in a broken car at the end of one not-too-impressive black mark. :D

Sounds like the classic too much throttle fishtale tankslapper. Just a little feather of the throttle rather than the hamfisted attack and his hooning would be much cheaper.

My friend had a transmission with a lifetime warrantied in an old 70's Malibu. He took that challenge personally. I got a lot of J turn practice time in that car.

The road I drive down on my commute is fairly rural. About once a month I can go 4 miles and not see one other single moving car on the way to work. I see lots of evidence of donuts and hooning on the pavement.

Not too long ago I saw a 18 year old (just a guess) kid walking back to his pickup carrying a drive-shaft. His truck was pulled off the road and there was some pretty clear evidence of a few neutral drop burnout one wheel peels. It is hard to do a burnout in a 6 cylinder old rusty pickup. I would love to hear him explain it to his dad.

I saw one of those on the way to work this morning. Most of the tracks leave on a slight uphill to the right from a stop sign. These went straight and then slightly right but not quick enough to avoid taking out a swath of dirt out of the embankment with the front end of the car. I don't know that they ever lifted until the impact.
