Schumacher out of coma

I'm cautiously optimistic.

I just read the same story via another source. I don't share your hope. I think he is very seriously hurt. The way the article was written was very guarded other and only stated that he had been transferred to a different hospital and was out of the coma.

Yes, read the F! doc blog. The choice of words was actually very guarded and technical. There isn't even confirmation that he's breathing voluntarily. This is not good news.

Sounds like good news, doesn't it? But before too much optimism sets in, read this:

^^ Yep... I figured this was actually the news, but, since many news sources were reporting this story today, I got my hopes up that good things were happening...

I just finished reading The Stig's book last night. There was a story of Schumacher driving a road Ferrari around the Dunsford track. It was a sobering reminder of who he used to be, and then to read the positive headlines first thing today, well, I thought it just might be a bit of serendipity.

Back to being jaded.....

damn...Hartstein, however, said he believes it is likely Schumacher is either only "minimally conscious" or in a "vegetative state", with only "fluctuating signs of interaction with the environment".

That sounds like millions of Americans now arriving(and will continue to do so) a train wreck in terms of health after a lifetime of abusing themselves.

That's he's out of a coma and being moved is a move in the right direction, and that's good news, especially for his family.

It's a bad injury that lands someone in a coma for 6 months. I hope for the best for him but fear that his position now is far worse than being dead.

I've been through this with a family menber.

Michael is gone. All that is left is a shell.
He is and will always be in a semi-vegitative state and blinking his eyes will most likely be the extent of his ability to interact.
It won't get better, he won't wake up one morning and be normal. He is gone forever.

I don't like it either but lets stop pretending. I was a huge fan of the man and have mourned our loss and shed my anger over the tragedy.
It's time we admit the truth and move on.

Wife had a cousin who had a head injury from a motorcycle accident. He was complete vegetable and managed to live over 20 years due to the great care provided by his mother. I met/saw him once and if it were me, I would have preferred being dead.

Short of a miracle, I would have to agree with Sammy.

Happened to my cousin after an auto accident. He was in an extended care facility in Tarzana for over 5 years. Me and him were very close and it would kill me every time I'd visit, his eyes would just roll around staring at the ceiling, I always felt he was never really "in there". To see the other poor souls in the same predicament (they were all in comas, mostly auto/mc accidents) was extremely depressing.

Fortunately my aunt and uncle (divorced, not so amicably) finally came to their senses and had his feeding tube removed. Still haunts me to this day.
