Anyone use a foam roller for muscles?

I just got a foam roller on the advice of my PT and LMT. I've got myofascial syndrome mostly due to my spine surgery 20 years ago. I have developed piriformis syndrome in the past year and get no relief from epidurals and TPI's.

Man, this thing is hard for an out of shape fat guy to use.

But, I am committed to get in shape for my health first and the fact that I have 2 weddings 5 months apart next year and I want to be flexible and in shape.

What has been yoour experience with a foam roller?

I use a foam roller after an hour of gym. It seems to help reduce the soreness but I am not measuring it scientifically. It feels good though.

I still get a real massage from time to time.

Weird timing. I just finished using it against my right shoulder. It's sore from having to contort my body in order to install a baby car seat in my 911.

Haha.

On a serious note, I just bought one three weeks ago. I had to work my inner thigh to help relieve hip soreness from my goofy jog gait. I'll let you google how that weird the move looks. looks. It was profound how much it hurt like a sports massage. You had to breath thru it.

It worked. Being a heavier guy, gravity really pushes you into the roller.

Funny thing, I just left the gym and the cute lady(she's my age) that works at the gym told me she'd show how to use one. She highly recommended it.

I've been using them for about 2 yrs now. It definitely helps. the ones with the dimple pattern on them, are even better.

The one I use is a three-way unit like this... works great.

Him; "Because it's a little bit harder, you should be able to feel it better"
Her; "Because it's a little bit smaller, I'm able to get it in deeper and manipulate it around to hit the right spot".

Are you sure this isn't a Saturday Night Live skit?

So much potential in that video… Bit of a let down Mike.

I use a very hard plastic roller for my quads, IT bands, groin, hamstrings and calfs. It really helps get the lactic acid out of the muscles after a rigorous workout.
It is also good at loosening tight muscles.

The bad part is the amount of pain this roller can provide. Once you get past the first pass, the pain goes down considerably and the muscles definitely feel better when you are finished.

I had an IT band injury so I bought a foam roller to do some exercises. Man that thing can generate some pain!
