Getting back to nature

Yesterday we had a big storm which knocked out a bunch of power.
I took an extension cord across the street, so that the neighbors could run lights/fridge/phone/computer.
But nobody wanted it.

It is quiet and dark tonight.

In the middle of last winter the power got knocked out for a day or so. I cooked an excellent meal on the woodburner and the GF said it was great then pointed out the oven is gas.

When the power would go out in CA a few years past...I'd get to fire up my Honda 3500 and do the survival thing.
Fridge and TV...I was good.

Power went out here a couple days ago. wouldn't have been that bad besides sweating your @ss off. Could be worse; umbrella in the pool sucks.

We spent five days at Lake of the Ozarks with no TV. It was pretty nice.

Over the years, have tried to make sure that the range, water heater & furnace are all gas. If so, it only takes the smallest of generators to run the fan on the furnace & a few bulbs. All the comforts for almost indefinitely.

However -- try it out before your next storm. We replaced the furnace and even with a high-end generator meant to do electronics well, it wouldn't run without a factory module added to condition the electrical wave for its electronics.

After a hurricane we usually go a few days without electricity. My simple generator runs the fridge, freezer and a TV. It's kinda of fun unless the gas stations don't have generators to pump gas for ours:)

Pretty much the same around here.
When Arthur went through earlier this month most of western Nova Scotia was without power due to the large amount of tree damage. We ran the generator for a few hours at a time for just over four days. Glad I kept the old well when we put in the deep one, otherwise the horses would have been thirsty.

Best

I live in a pretty friendly neighborhood. We had power go out for a whole day about a year ago. It was pretty cool, everybody was outside, kicking back, got a fire going.
