Looking for Nurburgring tips....

Next week I finally get to check the box on one of my top bucket list items...I will be in Belgium and Germany and while there is nothing at Spa when I drive by on the way to the Rhine valley I will be pit stopping into the Nurburgring.

I've researched on line and the website is pretty complete with opening times and prices for laps, taxi's and the Clio rental program.

I am with the family I am looking for general info and recommendations like getting into the facility, how long for lap (20 minutes?) areas to watch and or wait. Should I be there and try to get there early?
Will there be 50 cars waiting etc?

I most likely will be there on the Sunday session on the 10th at 1pm.

I will have a car rental and I am debating on taking the thing on the track but my 14 yr old wants to be a passenger so I need to factor that in. My wife doesn't fully understand my excitement but I Cant wait for it.

Any info is appreciated!!

No advice but want a full report with Pictures.......I've driven by the exit twice. As recently as 3 weeks ago...Didn't have the time to pull in on either occasion.....

Congrats, I went there a few years ago and did 3 laps in my Rental car. I took my fiancee for one lap, then did 2 laps alone. She didn't get it either till we got there. You buy your laps and they give you card that you use to open the arm and enter the track.

I'm sure you have already, but make sure the track is open to the public the day you plan to attend. I went on a Sunday and it was packed, it was like a cars and coffee at the track. The grass fields around the entrance were completely full of cars, so parking was a little bit of a pain. The road that is outside the area where you buy the tickets goes around different veiw spots of the track. You should see them.

Make sure you have all your rental car paperwork/Insurance with you, They didn't ask to see mine, but I've heard they will. Be careful, I spent a few hours there and saw 2 BMWs totaled. It had been raining earlier in the day and they got caught out.

Also, I took my GoPro camera with me, just to have it on video. Have fun, for a car guy it was pretty special to be there.

Monza_dh 07-29-2014 06:24 PM

thanks guys, yes I will have camera /video as well. I plan to get there when they are open on a sunday 1pm. I'm sure it will be packed. the only other times that week are 5-pm which I cannot do.

they have an online pre-purchase special: one lap, a track outline sticker and a burger in the cafe for after all for for 32 euros!

RS America 07-29-2014 06:49 PM

I've driven over 190 laps in my RS America over the past few years, last laps 2 months ago. I love the Ring.

Ok here goes, GPS co-ordinates for the Entrance. N 50 degrees 20.784
E 06 degrees 57.946

Opening Times for Tourist Rides (That's Us)

Öffnungszeiten Nordschleife*- Nürburgring

There are Photographers around the track, they post here and you can check and see
if they got you going around, usually about $10 per pic.

Best times to go, during the week. On the weekends the track is open longer but it also attracts every tuner within 1000 miles. I have gone on the weekends and sometimes I was lucky to get 1 lap in, lots of accidents.

Now for the Nitty Gritty. I have never been asked to show any documents, paperwork, drivers license or anything else. There are NO safety checks or anything else, Helmets not required or any other safety equipment for that matter.

You will be on the track with Mom’s Toyota stationwagon, full blown race cars, motorcycles, and the occasional full size bus.

Skill levels range from 1st time novices to professional race car drivers.

Normal German Rules of the Road apply. Doesn’t mean they are followed.

When you drive you laps, keep a eye on your rear view mirrors. When you see someone gaining, put on your right turn signal and move to the right to let them pass. If you get freaked out, turn on your emergency flashers and stay to the right.

I have had idiots try to pass me in the “S”s, the inside of corners, pass on the right (big no no). Last guy that I let pass me in the “S”s immediately dropped a wheel, spun and went into the barrier. Not only did he wreck his car, now he has to pay for a new barrier. I waved as I went by.

This is a track that can be so much fun and Kill you. It is filled with blind corners, elevation changes, on camber, off camber corners, changes in the track surfaces.
When you go around some corners the Sun will be blinding you. The Ring has it all.

There’s lots of restaurants in the area, but my favorite is at the Hotel Ewerts in Insul, one of the small villages around the Ring. It’s 16 kms from the Ring, if you go, tell them a guy with a RS America says HI. They’ll know who you’re talking about. I stayed there a lot.

Here's some pics. You might like this Discover Germany video I made in 2012. Eltz Castle is 40 km from the Ring.

Have Fun, you are going to love it. Hope this helps, anything else, feel free to ask.

Get there before it opens. It was supposed to open at 2 for me, bug they opened an hour early. I was third on the track and had it all to myself for the first two laps. I was done right as the masses got on the track.

Nostril Cheese 07-29-2014 07:37 PM

I love the CA plates at the ring.

RS - You leave your car in Europe or ship each trip? I have friends that store their mc in Germany for about $350 US per year......Just curious...

lowyder993s 07-29-2014 07:46 PM

If AT ALL possible...do it on Monday, sparse crowds. I've been 2x...rented a GT3RS for $400 a lap 1st time..RSRNurburg | Nurburgring | Car Rental | Sports Car Hire | Sightseeing Tours | Spa-Francorchamps | Hockenheim ...Suzuki Swift for $350 for 4 laps the 2nd time. Rent4Ring | Race car rentals at the Nurburgring Nordschleife
You'll be a chicane at 20 min laps. I was 9:35 in the RS, about 12 in the swift...EVERY LAP EVERYTIME was a local yellow somewhere...couldn't get used to the momentum car...MUST HAVE POWR!!!. Tho they DID have hand of god stopping power...always broke waaaaay too early!

Check to see if your rental is allowed on the Nordschliefe ...- Sixt rent a car - rental cars at cheap rates. used to...don't know if they still do.

WHATEVER you do...do not put the ring sticker on your car here if it hasn't been on the ring. Noob move! When you're done, go to the town of Adnau to Giulia's
Giulia, Adenau - Restaurant Reviews - TripAdvisor

relive the experience! Have a great time!!!

slodave 07-29-2014 09:18 PM

The last Pp...

Lots of cars here that run the sticker, but the actual car has not been on the track. I think a lot of us don't see anything wrong with that.
I have two small ones on each corner of my Targa. It's never been on the track, but I have. Sticker shows that you have driven the track, not though the car may not.

Done 50 laps over the past few years in Renault Clios and Megane RS Turbos from RSR Nurburg (whom I recommend very much).

The other thing to watch out for is loonies on motorcycles. I've had my best laps first thing in the morning, when the track is still a little wet and the bikes haven't come out to play.

As noted above, you are potentially liable for injuries or property damage (including damage to guardrails); make sure you have cover for injuries (see loons on bikes, above).

The track and vehicle dynamics are pretty well simulated in the Forza Motorsport 4 video game (Xbox 360).

I think this video provides a very good overview of the line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5grymEl6VHI

And finally :) I recommend the Haus Marvin in Dottingen. Contact Frau Ackermann via e-mail. Very nice rooms, good breakfast, and about 1/2 mile from the TF entrance:

Please do, and have fun! That's bucket list material for every car guy.

Cool beans - this is on my bucket list too! Last time I was in Germany for business, the Audi A3 I rented had GPS -- and when I flipped through the NAVI history, "Nurburgring Nordschleife" was in there! (Sixt rental). I was in Stuttgart and only had half a day to myself, to I went south into the Black Forest instead.

My tip: "Stay on the throttle until you see God. Then tap the brakes G E N T L Y."

Have fun!

Get a descend rental car!

Agree on renting a specific prepped car at the ring. We rented a VW Sirocco and it was a blast! No worries about burned brakes etc. what you will get in a "street" car. We did 6 laps and if remember correctly only paid 600 Eur.
