do you like RYE? while you're at it..break down the whiskeys.

never had it..till tonight.

wife took me out for din-din..and i order a manhanttan with rye. whoa!! where has this stuff been all my life.

first impressions..like bourbon, but not super sweet. right?

it got me thinking..i dont know much.

rye
bourbon
scotch
whiskey
miss anything?

it's all the same thing except, location location location? i get the peaty scotches..

break it down for me please. oddly enough, with scotches, i think i like the "younger" stuff..it seems to have more mouth feel. i am not rich enough to stack up the various boozes for back to back comparisions. plus my liver is not a decent speed bag..

Not the same: Location is only one variable. The water used in making can have a profound effect on the final taste.

Typically
Rye is made from Rye
Bourbon-Corn
Scotch/Whiskey-Barley

Wheat can be used and Rice can be used

Bourbon is aged in new barrels. Scotches are usually in old bourbon barrels or sherry barrels or cognac barrels.

If you want to taste a few, try some mini bottles. More and more companies are going toward providing mini bottles. Or go to Buy Whisky Online | Single Malt Whisky & More - Master of Malt and order a tasting set.

Really is worth finding a couple you really like.

By the way, if you like Rye, try Angel Envy.

I used to drink rye and coke which goes well together like rum and coke. The different brands of rye seem to all taste the same unlike scotch which if mixed with water have their own distinct tastes. Rye and coke(or ginger ale) I think make great pre dinner drinks.

I have gotten away from hard liquor and stick to beer(if weather is really hot) or red wine.

Cheers, Guy.

It's a Canadian thing.

Rye isn't made from rye anymore, it's made from corn. Some distillers use a bit of rye, but the flavour and colour come from the barrels. There's a microdistillery in Niagara wine country we visited recently. They sell rye made from rye and aged in metal vats - it's as clear as water. I already knew rye is made from corn, but the guy at the counter explained the bit about using small amounts of rye, vs. a complete rye-made whiskey like they had.

If you like Rye (and you should, if you like bourbon and scotch, since it is part of the holy trinity) try Alberta Springs Dark Horse. It is my favourite. And quite reasonably priced, too.

In the US, Rye whiskey must contain at least 51% rye by law. In Canada, it is not necessarily so.

Really? Fascinating! I had no idea. I'm going to have to investigate more American ryes, then. I've had the Bulleit, which was ok, but nothing special.

Interesting bit about Templeton in this article that was going around the other day.

I don't know much about Rye, but recently picked up a bottle of Michter's Rye that I thought was very good.

Bulliet is a 95% rye mashbill. If you can get Rittenhouse 100 where you are, give that a shot, no pun...

Ah (or should that be 'eh?) you add a U to some words, take the E out of some others... all comes out even in the end

As far as Scotch is concerned there are many different scotch whiskeys. If you do not enjoy the "peaty" types, try one of the Speyside offerings.

I'm a big fan of Old Overholt rye:

The www.bourbonenthusiast.com web site gives some good background information on brands and styles.

No it's not. It is just as much an American thing. However, it disappeared after the prohibition.

We make a great rye. We even malt the rye. Everything handcrafted in-house.
