Forum spam....
Hey Mods/Wayne....something has spammed the forum, but I don't see it when I logged on to report one. Go to the "Dog gone bad thread" to see an example. I've seen the "external links crap" on several threads now....
|
My post above has one now....

Good target demo for spam

Bumpity to the top...need some help here. Could someone who's running Windoze/IE verify something for me. If I'm logged on the forum, I don't see a pop-up ad below my first post in this thread. If I'm logged off, then I see it....on this thread and many others (always on the first post of a thread). Is this happening to anyone else? Doesn't matter which version of IE (11, 9, 8), and I've restored my pc to factory defaults and reapplied all Winblows updates....no change. This is the only site I've visited since my restore, I swear I haven't visited HootersNSpam.com either :D
ps: Started happening 'bout 3-4 days ago as I recall... Edited: I'm actually seeing the pop-up after the first post at the top of every thread page...but ONLY when NOT logged on....Hepme!!! |
Weird.
I just logged out and I'm seeing them too. But only in Safari, not in Chrome. I'm on a Mac so not OS related. |
I don't think its spam inasmuch as its a new method of targeted advertising the VB software allows....
Note that every thread now ends with an empty post from Pelican Parts.. depending on whether you are logged in while viewing the board you will or will not see the targeted adds, Included in that last post... I think this new method of advertising really lessens the user experience... In other words it SUCKS... Many BBS use this method of getting you to see advertising..Try reading Rennlist lately... I always though Pelican was a funded BBS and did not need external advertising... I've been wrong before... |
Um, I think it's supposed to do that. Guests are treated to a barrage of ads. Once you're logged in, not so much.
|
Thanks guys! Well, if it's by design, it's new as of 3-4 days ago, and it SUCKS :(

Thanks Wayne....It's no big deal (though I don't care for it), however, I normally don't log on unless I want to post, then I usually log back off. Over the years I've developed this habit, and it seems to avoid a fair amount of "cookies" issues that other's have experience from time to time. I appreciate this place a LOT...please tolerarte my "whining" :D
ps: I actually thought I'd picked up a virus/malware from another exchange with Nostatic in that doggy thread. |
Its like a lot of "free Apps" from the Apple store but if you buy the up-grade fro $2-$3 you get the no "Adds" version.
Free market at its best, one way or the other the developer get pay. |
Sorry i don't like the idea of having to login not to see them, poor user experience.....
I like to have a daily browse and only login to post. |

The only reason I replied to this thread is that I got an email notification that caused me to reply... The only time I log onto any forum is to reply to something that interests me... The banner adds were tolerable... The thread spamming adds suck... Logging out now till something else interesting comes up ;) |
Still better than some forums that limit to 10 posts per page, ads at top, bottom, and after every 3rd post. Annoying as hell and I wish I could block them on my phone too.

The only thing I notice that is unusual while not logged in, is a 911 race car at the bottom of each page/thread. I do have no script though.

It's clearly a bot, and I can't imagine why it's tolerated.
... and now it's gone |

This is a daily occurrence. The picture use to show at the end of their comment and if you clicked on it, it went to their website. |
But the Ad bot can be funny.
Over on PARF - on a thread about govt workers caught surfing porn 6hrs a day ... This was the add that came up http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1407027945.jpg Ad placement... more subtly sophisticated every day. :D |
