synesthesia

Wtf is synesthesia? Anyone here have it? Can anyone explain to me what it is in an easy to understand way? My lady friend has it and all she says is that music has colors. It makes zero sense to me.

Thanks.

If you really want to understand it, there are these special mushrooms you can take....

Not an expert but it is a cross-sensory phenomenon in which a sensation or experience is translated into one or more other sensations such as seeing music as color or digits as music or tastes as visual sensations or ... . Savants may experience this as it makes an experience or event much more vivid and so more readily recalled.

My understanding is that it's like the brain the senses confused or the wires crossed so that when you experience one sensation your brain interprets it as another.

Dr. Cytowic wrote about it in 'The Man Who Tasted Shapes'. I read it years ago. Good book. He sites many accounts of this. Crossed wires but can be induced by drugs as well...

My niece has it. Something about tasting words. She's an author and says it has a direct affect on the names of characters in her books and how she describes them.

I always wondered if folks who could taste shapes or see music experienced the same?

I could in the 70's.

Particularly Pink Floyd.
