Porsche Cayenne Turbo S vs Range Rover Evoque
 

There's a 2009 Cayenne Turbo S I'm kinda interested in trading our 2009 Cayenne GTS with, but since my wife drives it most of the time, she has been thinking about dropping out of Porsche ownership for a Range Rover Evoque. Why she has chosen to go this way is because she's frustrated with the minor problems our Cayenne has; seemingly flawless but noisy brakes, the low tire pressure warning light coming on regularly, and apparently the check engine light would periodically come on as well without any real problems. These minor problems have led my wife to think that Porsches are faulty and that she might find the Range Rover Evoque to be less problematic, but I'm trying to convince her that Porsches are high-quality vehicles (which they are), and that the Cayenne Turbo S I've been looking at might be less problematic.

So, fellow Pelicans and Porsche owners, here are my questions to y'all:

1) Is my wife making a good decision to go with a Land Rover just because of a few minor problems with our Cayenne?

2) Which car is actually more reliable? The '09 Cayenne Turbo S or the Range Rover Evoque? This one seems pretty obvious, but since I've never had any experiences with the Evoque, or any Land Rovers for that matter, I'm not really sure if they're really of higher quality, but I doubt they are.

From what I've heard about the pepper wagons. The turbos are less reliable than what you've got...


And the rover? Well... It's British. ;)

Glad I ended up going with the Boxster then. I had been seriously considering a Cayenne, but all of the examples for sale around here had plenty of miles. I didn't want to get in on a 80,000 mile complex Porsche just as stuff started getting old and wearing out. I hate to imagine what a water pump or alternator costs to get replaced on one of those.

I'm dead serious, she's thinking about turning away from Cayennes just because of some minor problems, but I also told her that since we bought it used, she can't expect it to be perfect. She also thinks it's embarrassing to be driving a high-end luxury car with noisy brakes, which gave her the reason to complain about our Cayenne's brakes.

Ok, how much are you willing to spend?

That depends on the trade-in value of the Cayenne we already have, but I haven't made the decision yet.

I don't know the Evoque, but I can say that modern Porsche automobiles are excellent. Cars today are complicated, and they all suffer from minor sensor/software glitches. I've had minor issues over the year, but these have all been dealt with by Porsche in a way that vastly exceeded my expectations.

My 997 was purchased as a CPO car. I took it in shortly after the warranty expired because the exhaust had a rattle in it. Turns out it was in one of the mufflers, and it was not a serviceable part, the whole can had to be replaced. PNA replaced both mufflers, no cost to me, and the car was out of warranty!

I owned a Boxster years ago, and my experiences were equally good.

I stick with Porsche because they treat their customers well.

I love my X1 and you could get a new one for the price of a used Cayenne or Evoque. It is a smaller vehicle though - it depends on what you want in that kind of car. The Evoque isn't particularly big though - seems like the Macan is closer in size to Evoque and X1 or X3.

It is absolutely NOT okay for a car of <5 years and <100k miles to have electrical gremlins, CEL and squeaky brakes. You guys are nuts claiming the Cayenne was a quality vehicle if it is doing that. None of my new cars do that. Not even my old ones!

Now the question is if the Range Rover is any better!? That I can't answer.

Hate to say it, but the Toyota products likely will yield better driver's experience for the wife. Buy a Lexus ...

Not to mention I've had the CEL reset a few times already, and I just don't see any problems with the brakes other than the noise. Other than those problems, the car is fine, it's just the wife who's becoming annoyed by it.

I'd hate to trade in the Cayenne for something as less fun to drive and of lesser value as a Toyota or Lexus.

First, the Cayenne GTS is an awesome model within of the Cayenne lineup. You get tremendous power minus the extra complication of the added turbos bolted to the engine. Additionally, Cayenne GTSs are just beautiful to look at. Second, squealing brakes are telling you something. If I were you, I would inspect the brakes for wear. How old are the brakes? When was the last time they were serviced? Brakes don't squeal just because. At what speed do they squeal? Our Cayenne made a squealing sound during very slow speeds. I discovered that the parking brake pads were adjusted too tightly. I backed them off a bit. No more squeal! Intermittent check engine light? Get a code reader, man! Find out what's going on. Could be a coil going bad. Research this issue on the Internet. Dude, your Cayenne is a cut above the rest. It rewards you with a driving experience few if any other SUVs can provide. If this will be her car you bet it matters if lights are turning on and the car squeals. You buy her another Porsche and it has dash lights going off, you'll be in the dog house. :D

You might want to check the pads. They have weights attached to them. I've noticed that on some lesser quality pads, the weights were loose and rattled.

The GTS is a fun car to drive. I'd keep that and figure out the problem.

Check this as well. There is a procedure for adjusting them.

Less value? You mean cost? personally, I don't think any toyota product can compare to a Cayenne S. in terms of fun. But then, how much fun (on road?) do you want in an SUV? They handle like a real sports car, I have driven them and driven my friend's for more then half a day. I can tell you this, I will take my 4 runner any day of the week especially if it dirt driving is involved.

Better driving experience? My wife has a Lexus. Its a quality vehicle, but its like driving a rolling mausoleum. Incredibly mundane.

Just resurrecting an old thread, hoping it'll help someone in a similar situation to the OP.

I bought a Porsche Macan S and it's a fantastic car. Useful like an SUV, drives like a Porsche. 7-speed PDK, twin-turbo V6 (from the Panamera)...just love it. Reasonably priced, too, if you can avoid the big $$ add-ons.
