I'm not curtious?

So the guy across the street a couple doors down comes over this morning at 8:30 and asks me for some common courtesy. I was sanding my car preparing for paint with an orbital sander. He said it's rude to do that at 8:00 am on saturday morning.
I was shocked that he was so irritated that he came over to ask that. I started sanding at 8 but could have started earlier. I didn't want to too early. SO I said "I don't want to make your family uncomfortable so I'll stop till a little later but don't come over and ask for common courtesy when It's 8:30. It's not 11pm or 6 am, that's rude not 8am". He didn't agree.
So am I wrong and I am rude sanding at 8am Saturday morning?

After 8am - all bets are off.

Nothing wrong with the neighbor coming over as long as he was respectful with his request.

But to answer your question - after 8am I don't see a problem with making as much noise as necessary to do your work.

I sure wish people wouldn't have their lawn service come at 8AM on weekends, I'd like to sleep in a little. I would say anytime after 9AM personally, 8AM is still a bit early.

How loud is it any way?

In my neighborhood we try and stick to around 9AM. Everyone has kids so no one gets to sleep past then anyway. At least he talked to you about it rather than some passive-aggressive BS.

Every once in a while I get to sleep in. Maybe 3-4 times per year. If someone woke me up at 8AM on that day, I'd be pissed too...

Got it. Well I'm not a guy that wants to irritate neighbors. But when I get my mind on that damn car all else falls to a sort of unimportant level.
The thing is I had to ask "is it the sander or the music"? He didn't like the sander.
It's not pnumatic, just an electrical sander that's on it's last leg. Probably louder tan normal but again, I don't notice anything other than how much I need to remove.

Yeah, it's not like I run a zork, I could but I choose to keep things civil.

Is it possible that this isn't the first (or worst) time?

I have been sanding lately. Never in the morning though. I work early till 6 and then try and come home to sand for an hour or so. I've sanded about 4 times for an hour or little more each time. I have also grinded when I was making the brackets for the bumpers but in short bursts. Actually the sanding is also short bursts of a minute or so each time.

Some folks will get irritated over a diesel truck starting at 6am, some over a loud Harley in the middle of the afternoon, some over Lawn Care crews (that ARE going to be mowing "somewhere" at 7ish around here), some over... Well, you get the point . Me...I hold off until 8 before I start to "work" with stuff that makes a fair amount of noise, but then it's THEIR problem...not mine IMO. Don't like a neighborhood with "noise" during "normal hours" ...then move out to the country....and good LUCK with that one too

To me 8:00am is too early, but 9:00am is fine. any time after 9.30pm is a no go as well. At least for me anyway.

8am is too early for mechanical noise. I think 9am-9pm is reasonable.

I'm OK with 8AM, but then I'm a morning person... I would throw out the caveat that give it a little bit of a break on holidays... some guy broke out his leaf blower to dry off his truck early AM on Thanksgiving... not crack of dawn but I was all kicking back on the porch with a mug of coffee and sun was shining and birds were singing and I was all ahhhhh... then WRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
However I didn't walk over there and give him a hard time.

However you never know where the other guy was coming from... maybe he was hungover?

Or maybe wife woke up in the mood, they started to get frisky... then she was "NOT THAT GUY WITH THE SANDER AGAIN!"

Now if someone could talk to my neighbor's who are in their backyard hooting and hollering until 2-3AM... THAT would be nice!

My neighbor is having his roof done and they were here at 7 AM this morning running the shingles up to the roof with the electric lift. They woke my wife and I up as my window is right next to where they were working. I was not happy about it but my neighbor is a decent guy who never gives me a hard time so I just shrugged it off and let it go. I actually got a lot more done today since I was up early anyway.
Do you normally get along with this guy? Have you been a good neighbor otherwise? If so I side with you and say that 8 AM is fine. Some people look for things to complain about

Why don't you start at 5am?

Wouldn't bother me a bit.

He probably was having a bad day. Not getting any from the wife and a sincere hangover. Will do that to a mans temper.
