It's a different skill set than say, track driving. But rally drivers don't do much passing, and you could argue there's quite a talent there too. But in terms of pure car control, I have to agree with you. Just look at how good Loeb has been in GT racing or Touring cars, clearly car control is paramount. Conversely few F1 drivers have made it in rally, Raikonnen and Kubica crashed a lot. I would also pick drivers from the Group B era, when sliding was the norm. Nowadays rally cars make less power than a Honda Minivan, which is disappointing, but also forces them to slide less for efficiency...
On a side note, when the first Delta integrale Evo with martini colors becomes eligible for import in the US, it's mine ;-) |

Seems to me you're asking about what's known as car control. Seems to me it exists in lots of racing forums - Robert Kubica had/has it, no matter what he's driving, so does Fernando Alonzo, so does Scott Dixon. Perhaps the WRC guys get more chances to show off their skill as they get sooo freakin' crossed up on crazy surfaces like snow, ice, water, gravel, and yes, even asphalt, once in awhile.

"...car control."
~~~~~~~~~ Yes. Better stated. . Here's a little homologated Group B rig I had for a few years - never raced - as far as car control was concerned, it brought more to the occasion than I did: ![]() One of the few with factory aluminum roof and bonnet. 2,100 lbs./210 hp. . ![]() . .
I love those little Renaults.
That's one I would never have sold.
![]() . Sold it to a kidney transplant surgeon in LA who sent his man up to the Bay Area with a transporter to collect it. His man was a full-time employee and said that the Dr. had a collection of Ferrari's, etc. Also had a 205 Turbo 16 Peugeot. The Dr. called me a few months later saying that he was only driving my Turbo II...he loved it that much. . A pisser, eh? Oh well, not the first mistake I made around cars. I dumped the $23k into the market to offset the pain.
