Titanium and carbon fiber. It's really fast so it creates more heat than you'd want to set in your lap. There's also a pleasantly inviting aroma reminiscent of ozone and burning electrical equipment. Many people worry when they notice it until their tech tells them, "they all do that." They can be a little finicky, but once you know them they will do things for you that no other laptop can. Other people will stare, some dumbfounded, some jealous, some in awe. And don't expect any frivolous bells and whistles, this thing is all business, built for speed and functionality.
Laptop by Porsche

Someone's been lurking at Slashdot.

As you can see, this is a VPR like Leland's roommate's.

Never heard of VPR before that. Wonder where they scrounged up the $$$ to afford Porsche consulting.

I'll bet Bill Gates is happy. With all the high $ Porsches he's into, he must be tickled to see the first P-Design notebook, with a wide-aspect, having a Windows base OS.

Is it bottom heavy?

Does it leak oil onto your lap or water into your feet?

Is replacement parts (ie, bolts, keyboard, buttons, etc.) cost a 10x compared to other?

Do they plan on making an all-weather SUV version?

If not to any of the above, then it can't be by Porsche.

Sorry, I had to.

I have to say that I am unimpressed. Other than the fact it was externally designed by Porsche, it looks amazingly like the titanium powerbook I have been using for a long while. Besides, it's a Wintel machine.

That's pretty pathetic...a piss-poor imitation of a G4 Ti-book.

"You can load discs directly into the DVD/CD-RW drive slot--no tray slides out to grab your CD."

uh...wow. Hey, at least is thicker and heavier than a Powerbook. And made for BestBuy!

Nostatic,
Think of the extra poundage the thing carries over the Ti-book as road hugging weight.

Looks more like a Sony knock off to me. Sony was using magnisium for their cases long before apple started using Ti . . .which I will add is an inferior choice of materials. Ti has the best thermal insulation properties . . why would you want that wrapped around a computer?

I love my HP pavilion notebook! No need for me to get to fancy. Totally wireless internet, too... Boy are we spoiled in 2002!

This is not an issue for a RISC processor since they run so much cooler. PC's need as much cooling as possible since the Intel chip is so inefficent which is compounded Windows bloatware. Heck, Windows can't even run the Hotmail servers, they all run on Sun boxes. Pretty funny.

Cheers, James

heh-heh . . .I figured someone would bring that up. Good point.
Though I'll still hold mag over Ti for this application, even though TI is great stuff, IMO.
Now, can someone tell me how to refinish oak? . . . my Dell notebook cooked a hole into my desk.

Its pretty funny that I found this post about the porsche laptop.
My wifes side of the family think I am spoiled or something because I have a p-car and they are always making comments about that.
So today my brother-in-law sends me the link to that very same laptop and the title of the e-mail was jerrys next purchase (jerry being me btw). He also sent it to the rest of the family
So I couldn't resist. I sent him a picture of the black carrera gt and the title of my e-mail was my next purchase (after I win lotto)

Ti looks cooler. I wish Apple used 3/2.5 or 6/4 though...the CP stuff is pretty soft. Mg is pedestrian. Now if they made it out of sodium...that would be a light (lite) show

But still....it's *titanium*. Years ago I had a Teledyne road bike frame...the first production Ti frame. I never built it up or road it (they had a habit of snapping), but rather just hung it in the house as art. I believe a bike museum up in the Bay Area has it now...I'd actually like to find it. I had it on loan at Wheelsmith's shop for display and they then went away.

mmm....Ti

Wow, I used to work for Merlin who made Ti frames back in the late 80's. Neat bikes, now, what was this post about??

Cheers and everyone have a good weekend!!! I'll be at Pocono Speedway trying to get the tires hot enough....

James

James, so you're the one responsible for that pressed-in bottom bracket. Shame on you...but at least it was Grease-guard as I recall.

I lusted after Merlins back then, but I was riding steel (Landshark, then a sweet Davidson w/75 degree head angle...great crit bike). When I finally could afford Ti, Merlin was in disarray, and I fell for a Moots. And to this day the love continues.
