Driving to Canada
I'm driving to the Toronto area this weekend to drop off some parts, pick up some parts for me, and pick up some parts for other people.
Can I cross the border with just a license or do I need my passport? How will Customs work on the stuff I'm bringing in, my stuff I'm bringing back, and stuff for other people I'm bringing back?

I would take a passport. If the stuff you are bringing back is less than $2k, there's no duty. Above that, it's at the discretion of the customs guy that you talk to. I'd probably skip the "stuff for other people" notion, unless the other people are with you. Having a bill of sale for what you bring back would be a good idea.

Just dug it out, passport expired in Jan 2014.
Bringing up: Carrera oil lines Bringing back for me: 69-73 fenders, 76 915 Bringing for other people: vintage sport seats, early S oil lines. I think we can make a reasonable bill of sale for under $2K and fine to have it all for me, agree there. how fast can I get a new passport? any ideas?

Technically, you don't need a passport to cross into Canada, but you do need one to get back into the US. As for your goods, I don't know but expect delays in both directions. A link Canada Border Services

2 to 3 weeks is the usual wait time for an expedited passport. Try calling one of the zillions of companies that offer quicker service. No idea how they do what they do but they claim they can get it done in a few days. Maybe you'll get lucky...

How long does it take to get a passport? - topics.info.com
https://www.abriggs.com/locations/office/3 Timely thread since it made me reach over and check the expiration date on mine. Two more years, whew. As an obtw, whenever I travel, even if I am planning to travel only in the States, I always pack my passport. I also keep a picture of it secure on my phone. Travel safe.

Thanks Paul, JR and Ian. I'll check it today, worst case scenario is the trip is postponed. Ian, I'll let you know my plans, also seeing Chris in Hamilton.

I have an appointment on Thursday but need to figure out the proof of travel requirement. Might have to create a letter from my boss, but he's a jerk, so not sure if it will fly.
Only, looks like if all goes well, I'm going to the Unobtanium Open House/Swap meet in Ravena, NY Saturday the 30th and then from there up to CAN. Will check to see if you are on the way from there or on the way back, would love to stop by and order most of your menu! Your food always looks amazing.

You can go to an expedited passport center (not sure if there's one near you) and get one in 24 hours or so. In my recent experience, normal passport processing time using the Post Office for renewal is very quick - about a week.

Not sure about bringing $2000 worth of items back and forth and no duty I go back and forth to the states quite often to pick product up in Lewiston New York get taxed on everything over 150 bucks you might want to check the website and see what yours are allowed to bring into the US and what you're allowed to bring into Canada just my thoughts

I know at the Federal Building on Wilshire in LA you can get same day service with proof of travel. Seems the same goes for Boston, don't know how you'd provide proof of travel if driving..

Bring your parka. The temperature drops 65 Fahrenheit degrees at the border.
(And your passport!)

Shaun, as others have said - you need a passport. My son and I were in Detriot this past weekend and thought about going to Canada. We did not have passports - next time we will, although the isn't much in Windsor except strip clubs.

In the case of used vehicle parts (it breaks down much further than that, but who cares?) the limit was $2k the last time I came in from Canada. The customs guy took one look and said, "See ya, have a nice day". Maybe I have a trustworthy appearance... Canadians, on the other hand, get royally screwed on customs duty. That seems to be a problem with stuff going INTO Canada, not out of Canada. JR |
