How much is Bakersfield going to suck - Aug - Nov

Please tell me it's just a "dry heat"

Got the job with Halliburton and will be based out of Bakersfield for a few months until I move to Denver Late fall. Are there any must do's? I am big into the outdoors, so I don't mind a weekend trip a few hours away to check out the state.

Anybody in the area want to hang out?

Bakersfield is the armpit of California. Yes it will be hot. Lake Isabella is nice for camping.

and smelly. I kid, it just smells like sweltering hot.

One of the hottest women I ever dated was from Oildale.

Any must do things in the Bakersfield area? Dude, you should be writing for Jimmy Kimmel or something.

Yosemite is not too far, Tahoe is a little farther, Joshua Tree maybe.

The only good thing about Bakersfield, that I know of, is Buck Owens' Crystal Palace. Check it out. And brush up on your line dancing.

Also, you can drive up to the mountains.

You've been to the Middle East

With a car and a weekend, there is nothing you can't do within a three hour drive after work on Friday.

I used to spent a month at at time at NAS China Lake, hard by Ridgecrest, which makes Bakersfield look like Bruges.

I'd be all over the Golden State, Nevada, Az.

Have fun!

Every time I've been in Bakersfield it's felt like opening the oven to see if dinner is ready. The only good thing I can think of is its proximity to The Sierra Nevadas. If you like mountains, you'll have plenty nearby to play in.

Hate to say but the only must do in Bakersfield is leave Bakersfield. It will be very hot and no wind. If you can get to a Lake Isabella, I recommend it.

LOL! Bakersfield sucking has nothing to do with which month it is..

As Toby said,,things to do consist of getting out of Bakersfield.

As Paul says, SLO is 2 hours plus away as is Santa Barbara and Ventura. I like Sequoia Nat. Park if you're into hiking/camping.

What do you say to a good looking girl in oildale?
You aint from around here, are ya honey? Stay away from oildale!

Bakersfield can be a decent starting spot, with stuff to see not far away. There is a big difference in temperature between night and day.

And you like spiders, right?

Last time in Bakersfield was in court for doing 143 MPH in my 930.

I told the Judge that I was a poor student, he laughed.

1991.

Now, I take it easy on 5.

Were I ever to have the misfortune to find myself in Bakersfield, I'd just have to crank up the Stones and run me some red lights (....on my way OUT of town of course)

I was driving home early Sunday morning through Bakersfield
Listening to gospel music on the colored radio station
And the preacher said, "You know you always have the Lord by your side"
And I was so pleased to be informed of this that I ran
Twenty red lights in his honor
Thank you Jesus, thank you Lord

you live in Houston and you're worried about the heat in Bakersfield?

I think it will be a step cooler for you.

Funny I just left a project kind of near Bakersfield and flew to Denver for another. Flew in and out of Bakersfield a few times, mostly stayed in Mojave and Tehachapi. Like someone mentioned above, I would drive up to Sequoia National Park, go hiking or at least see some huge ass trees.

Bakersfield is a notch cooler the Houston in Aug but in Houston they even air condition the parking garages. Bakersfield has more bugs than Orlando if that is even possible.

You don't see many mtns in Tejas so soak em up while you are here. Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Kern river. The trout fishing is good and you can catch your limit every day in the right spots. If you are in very good shape and like to challenge yourself, work up to a weekend Mt Whitney ascent. It's a serious trek to 14,000 so don't take it lightly, but a nice notch in the walking stick for a wild-eyed peak bagger.

Buttonwillow and WSIR are both doable weekend events but pretty miserable before late Sept/Oct.

The only good thing about Bakersfield is that there are roads leading away from it and it's in California. Bakersfield is nothing that a couple hours of fast driving can't cure. In almost any direction. It's hot, extremely polluted and smells like cow schit. There is nothing to do but interact with the other poor slobs who live there and are probably pissed-off about it and itching for a fight. Have fun!

you lucky bastard!! my first job offer out of college was also with Halliburton..and they wanted to send me to Midland/Odessa area..

right. i declined, very politely. if they would have offered Bakersfield, i would have screeched tires running out of El Paso texas. you can see the LA lights, if you squint.

i almost got my ass kicked in Midland when my brother bought his bass boat there. err..for being a person of color. okay, a smart ass, loud, person of color..but it really was the color thing that started it.
