You can deactivate your account on the preferences. Unfortunately everything you've ever done there is not yours and it's there forever. Enjoy!

Why not just stop logging on?

I'm not sure you can really fully delete your FB account. Ever.

The only way to truly delete Facebook involves a video camera, a dull knife, pliers and Mark Zuckerberg tied to a chair...

I would think that would be enough.

But you can also remove cookies from your history and remove FB from your favorites.

Facebook. 20 years ago if somebody would have told me that in the future millions of people will buy stock in a publicly traded company with a 2013 PE ratio of 129.87, that sold or manufactured zero product or consumer services, and made it's revenue by selling the personal and confidential information of it's volunteer users to targeted advertising...I would have told them they were nuts!

Thirty years ago I was out of work and my dad wanted to set me up with a business... I suggested we open a coffee house... my dad: "you can't make money selling coffee!!!"

How can I tell 1,350 people I don't want to be friends or know what they had for lunch?

I got off of Faceplant a few years ago, it was an onerous and difficult process with the Faceplant people ranging from uncooperative to abrasive all the way. They finally sent me an email of the ilk " if you do not sign in within the next 3 months to your FB account, it will be permanently deleted......etc etc).

Haven't touched the thing for a number of years, I think it is the scourge of our times, the exit process alone proves it.

Am I the only one who thinks it's funny how so many people are so worried that the Government is collecting information on them, but then they turn around and willingly post all of it on Facebook?

Whenever I hear a guy talk about Facebook, I always make it a point to say "isn't that for jr. high girls?"

You can request to have your account deleted and then formally request that you be removed ("Forgotten") from their system entirely.

Or that some people are such drama queens they have to "quit" a website, just stop using it and they will delete your account eventually.

Or are you afraid to appear like the abandoned rusted out 72 Buick on the road side of the great information highway?

I quit years ago. It was fun though mentioning a weird selfie somebody took or a particular drama they posted when I ran into them. You could see the shame and embarrassment when mentioned. If I want to see you I'll eventually run into you at WalMart or walking around downtown like normal people. Thankfully my teenage girls feel the same way after seeing all the drama their classmates create on Facebook.

What's the big deal?

Facebook is about fun social activities.

Their policies may have changed, but they retain your account for a long, long time...as in a number of years. It is shortening that retention period that is likely the issue.
