Same major radio brands out there - if your radio isn't a dinosaur and modular you may even be able to get a 2.4Ghz module for it.

Bluetooth....

It's more like WiFi - same 2.4Ghz band in fact and very similar in the way they do channel management (frequency hopping spread spectrum).

I was a long time Futaba customer but JR/Spektrum won me over with their prices and ease of use. Futaba just wanted too much and the distributor's overall product selection was just no where near what the JR/Spektrum's selection was.

Anyway - things have gone Electric pretty much. I haven't bought a tank of glow fuel in a few years now actually.

You can still fly those airplanes and if the radios are post 1991 with the silver sticker you can still use them just as you did before with a frequency pin board and everything. Replace the batteries though... I suspect you'll be the only one on 72Mhz. :)

As far as what to get - This little T-28 is a great trainer though not low wing.

If you could fly before though I'm sure it'll be fine. :D

T-28 Trojan BNF | HorizonHobby

Seriously, I had a guy on a buddy box on one today and it was pretty much his first flight outside of the simulator. Had him doing the pattern within a few minutes. My boys bang this thing around with me and it goes forever on a pretty cheap 2200mah 3cell lipo.

The bind and fly comes with everything except a transmitter I believe. So pickup a spektrum TX (The new DX6 is pretty amazing for the price) and update your AMA membership online and head to the nearest field to get someone to help you out.

Now I know I need to work back into my reflexes. In my heyday I was competing and writing for a local rc air magazine so I'm no noob.

But tech has changed so much since I quit. So what's the simplest way for me to get back in to a high wing trainer. I don't have a huge amount of time for local shopping, prefer a good kit or configurable solution online.

Suggestions?

Okay, I didn't see this. The T-28 is still my recommendation but it may end up being too tame for you. Still - I have one to knock around and give random lessons with (plus to keep my boys flying) so basically it should be standard issue to every RC Pilot. They have a blue/grey one too.

As far as jets go - the A-10 is a fantastic jet and I would easily recommend it to anyone as a first jet. check out RC Airplanes - Radio Control Airplanes and Helicopters, Spektrum, FMS, RocHobby, Freewing, Dynam, Parkzone, Eflite, Flyzone, Hitec, Jets, Gliders, Warbirds, Biplanes.

I was out today and the guy who is doing the design for one of the manufacturers of these things was watching me fly the F-86 and taking pictures as I flew it. Before I left he came over and complimented me on my flying (always nice) and told me he had taking some pics (I didn't see him doing that). He invited me to come join him and some others with the 86 out at Chino in a couple of weeks for some flying there. I'm waiting on the details but just the offer is nice to hear. I've competed in scale and pattern competitions but only for fun really and only local here in LA.

I was very into rc cars in the 80s and early 90s. Used to race indoor 1/10th scale oval, 1/12 road courses. Also had couple off road buggies and trucks. Never had the money to go flying back then. But every now and then I get a real craving for one of the new indoor helicopters.

So is that the pairing or binding I hear about? Same frequency but with an embedded code? Suggestions on a good radio system?

berettafan 09-29-2014 06:16 AM

You guys suck.

I had quit this hobby about 5 years ago when I saw it growing out of control (not to mention crashing my first low winged sporty plan in a bean field and watching the lipo catch fire!).

Had everything from a slowstick to a 6' electro telemaster (OMG that was a fun plane!).

Just yesterday my cousin was showing me his new powered glider with a go pro mounted on the top. Flew it on the beach and now I'm googling powered gliders......

Such a fun hobby.

Such an expensive hobby.

A bunch of lovely models fellas

I am a lifer rc guy. I begged for a tamiya hotshot for my 13th birthday. That was 25 years ago and I have bought 2-5 Rc models per yer since.

I don't have a local field so I have been doing a lot of parkflying lately. Mostly helicopters. I have most all of the horizon/blade line of micro.

I also like ther UMX ulra micro sport planes. They fly pretty well for being tiny. I was thinking about trying one of the EDFs

I do miss the smell and sound of nitro sometimes though :(

So do you guys have any thoughts on a electric powered glider that would be a good platform for a gopro?

cousin is using a Radian and it surely flew well but wouldn't mind something a touch more scale looking.

Scale gliders (powered) tend to not be good platforms for the gopro (Even the radian I think would be less than optimal) because while they can carry the weight they have a prop in front - I'd prefer something with a backwards facing mid mounted power system.

That's just me though...

With the older 72mhz gear it was passive radio basically. You made sure you were the only RX/TX combo on that channel in range via the pin board at the flying field (or luck).

The TX was transmitting on a frequency in the band and the RX was listening on that one.

Passive = old'n busted.

With the newer 2.4Ghz systems the TX/RX are actually paired together actively so that they 'know' each other and interference is a lot less likely to occur. These things are smart too with my DX9 I can actually monitor actively the quality and the voice features of the TX will tell me when there is a 'lock out' event where signal is lost or degraded. The RX also has a method of keeping track of these and reporting them to you - the pilot via the LEDs on the RX (flashing means there was a lockout basically). This can help you make sure your positioning the antennas correctly.

So, there aren't specific frequencies you have to worry about anymore as the radios automatically do this for you. You do have to actively bind/pair the TX/RX together but that is usually a one time thing (unless you leave the RX unpowered for a very long time but I have rarely had that happen) when you install your gear into the model.

No more crystals, no more pins and 2.4Ghz is huge so airspace at busy fields can get super crowded where as before with the single channels and pin boards - well it rate limited folks in the air.

It's awesome and I love it.

Mikester, those are some bada$$ planes you have there!

I didn't the R/C car thing for a while... alas the time and money involved is more than I can handle.

Any extra $$$ I have now gets sucked up by the Miata... and the guitars... and putting a daughter through college...

I had a few sailplanes but none the moment (left them back home). However my company is building the next, better, bigger version of this. We built the last version also, which set the world record. The whole construction is just like a traditional model plane, scaled up. You can imagine it's a wet dream for an RC plane person, pure pre-preg bliss

My father has asked me to help him sell this plane.
He says it is too big for him. He's kind of old, and has trouble loading it into the truck to go fly.

If any of you are interested, contact me. And be prepared to tell me how to ship this thing without costing you a fortune, and without damaging it.

So has anyone used the trainers with Safe tech from Horizon Hobby, or one of their companies? I see you can get RTF or BNF for $299 or $259. I was looking at them since there is no one nearby to use a buddy system.
