learning thru repetition.

one of things i have to do is check contractor's layouts.

we use a total station. man, i hated that thing. problem was, i never seem to use it enough to become proficient at it. nothing worse than having a bunch of labor and expensive equipment idling, while i am trying to level things, remember what buttons i need to push, etc.

the guys that work for me, all seem to take way longer than i do, so when it is crunch time, i take the helm. you know what? i am getting better and better. no more panicked phone calls to our office expert, or referring to my pocket cheat sheets (which after all these years, is getting quite smudged)

finding all the coordinates is a good time. only time in life i will still use trigonometry. i check all the CAD stuff, by doing the math old school.

"oscar had a heap of apples" :D

i am nervous about my next 911 valve adjust..i just dont do it enough anymore, since my friends are selling their cars.
repetition is a powerful instructor.

Just step up and get a LIDAR unit. ;)

Give it 10,000 hours and you'll have it mastered!

As my oldest daughter's dance teachers say "Practice makes permament"

"Perfect practice makes perfect permanent."

Funny, I was just reviewing a paper on OEE, which proficient tool usage is a part of it.

Overall Equipment Effectiveness.

I work with a bunch of different IT systems at work. I've been doing this job for 15 years. I'm pretty familiar with the systems and even if I end up having to look at another vendor's version, I still "get it". But we have this one system at work that's different than all of the rest. I'd love to learn it. It's not that common, but I like to learn new things. Unfortunately, everytime I learn this stuff or get a little training, I forget 99% of what I learned because I only get to work with it about 3-4 times a year. It's frustrating.

Actually, that's been proven as bunk. Even the folks that originally said it agree that it's bunk. Apparently, aptitude, talent, intelligence, etc... have a large effect on learning.

Damn. All those hours into becoming a Jedi Master and I still can't levitate the stupid car I drove into the swamp. Guess I'll just have to call AAA.

Tell that to a guy landing a Piper Cub in a strong crosswind.

petrolhead611 09-19-2014 03:09 AM

in that case Every approach is a missed approach......unless you get it right.

Whast do I know! I've only ever flown Cubs on floats and landed on large lakes so crosswinds never came into it.

I heard a comedian say, "Practice makes perfect, but since nobody's perfect, why practice???"
