Would you buy a plasma today?

My TV has just died and I need a 55" replacement. I was at Costco and looked at all the new LED TV's which are fine, the 4k's were nice and price is really no object. But they had one plasma still and I swear it looked better than the LED competitors.

My questions is does anyone still buy plasmas these days? We have one upstairs that's smaller, and it's been working for about 10 years now with no issues.

Unless you are a "video-phile" then NO! Plasma TVs put out a ton of heat and LED/LCD technology is so good these days.......for cheap!

Just my $.02

Hell yes!

Grab the last Panasonic's until they are still around!

LCD with same colour gamut and black level will cost you major $$$$ and still have worse motion resolution.

Only minus with Plasma's is rather poor overall brightness and power consumption. They aren't great kitchen tellies. But for evening movie watching, nothing comes close (OLED will, when it appears).
Manufacturers dropped plasmas because they are expensive to produce, quite heavy and cannot be made into 4K (not cheaply) = less profit.
They dropped the tube amps as well ;)

TV is never used during the day, rules of the house.

Bought a 50" plasma for our game room TV earlier this year. It was cheaper than most others and has a better picture.

I doubt if you really mean this. At Cedia in Denver 2 weeks ago, i saw these LG displays:

105-inch class Model 105UC9, $99,999.99
98-inch class Model 98UB9800, $39,999.99
84-inch class Model 84UB9800, $9,999.99

All of them were stunning.

That said, for normal everyday use, I would buy a Panasonic Plasma.

Yes, Samsung and Panasonic make excellent plasma TV's. A few years back i purchased three Samsung TV's at the same time, 1 Plasma, 1LED , 1 LCD. I love my Plasma the best of the three you'll fined alot of Plasma haters out there i don't know why? And my power bill remains about the same. I also like Samsung TV's because all three remote controls work on different types around the house.

I like my 55" Panasonic Viera plasma.
The 3d glasses are pricey though but my son loves the movies in 3d.
Have mine in the basement and the extra heat is welcome there.

The Sony 4K resolution ultra high definition TVs are really nice :)

I have a VT series Panasonic in 50 inches and a ZT series Panasonic in 65 inches, both Plasma and the ZT is awesome...

lol, well "price in the 55" range is no real object" And I wouldn't be opposed to spending 10k on an 84 inch TV, I just can't use one that big!

Nickshu 09-21-2014 02:45 PM

I just bought a Samsung series 8 UHDTV (4K) at 65“. It is awesome. I looked at Plasma too but could not tell the difference, however bigger videophiles than me maybe could. I'm very happy with mine. Price was around $3k. It replaced a 47“ Samsung LCD that was about 6 years old and at the time was a top level model. It's a big step up so I think from where you are coming most newer tvs will be a major jump in picture quality.

I looked at OLEDs, they have great colors especially blacks but still very very expensive.

Bigger is better! I have a Pana VT 55 & I like it a lot. I don't like the usual LCD - more contrast than real life - image. A plasma image is typically more film-like - i.e. softer contrast with less 'etching'.

Put a 65" Pana plasma in the basement last year.

No regrets.

Doug E 09-21-2014 04:42 PM

+1 on the plasma. I put a 60" Panasonic in the basement last year and couldn't be happier. The resolution speed and picture is much better then an LED/LCD. On mine the heat effect is minimal but I understand the old ones used to put off lots more heat.

Scott R 09-21-2014 05:01 PM

OK, well I went with a "Vizio" 4k 60" because of the rebate. I hope I made the right choice because now I have to reprogram all of the touch panels for it and that not something I want to do twice.

Scuba Steve 09-21-2014 05:04 PM

Nope, but that's more to do with glare from windows in the room than anything else.

I have a Samsung plasma that's going on 11 years old. Was best at the time. Still looks and works great, but if I were to replace it, probably go with LED now.

Don Ro 09-22-2014 07:41 AM

I bought 3 LED TVs at Costco over the years. I like Costco because they will extend the factory warranty out to 3 years. Also, and I like this, the boys in the TV dept. will let you know when a sale is upcoming. At least at the two Costcos from which I bought my 3 TVs.
I do like the picture on Plasma.

I have a 55" Panasonic Viera Plasma, and I have been really happy with it. I also like the seamless Netflix integration through the Viera internet. We have our TV hooked directly to the internet router and solely watch movies and Netflix.

Next TV will be an LCD or an LED depending on technology and price at the time of purchase. This Plasma was very inexpensive for the quality, and I have been happy with it so far.
