Steel wool - Sandpaper Grit Equivalent:

'Been doing some gun bluing lately...thought I'd share some Google searching:
.
I always thought that 0000 steel wool was finer than 400 grit - guess not.
No wonder I had to go back and hit it with 1200 grit.

4/0 steel wool = 400 grit sandpaper
3/0 steel wool = 280 grit
2/0 steel wool = 180 grit
2/0 steel wool = 120 grit
1 steel wool = 100 grit
2 steel wool = 60 grit
3 steel wool = 50 grit
4 steel wool = 36 grit

Anticipating the next question:

White Scotchbrite = 1200 grit (it has no abrasive)
Gray Scotchbrite = about 400 - 600
Maroon Scotchbrite = about 220-280
Green Scotchbrite = about 150 - 180

Be a little careful. Different manufacturers of non-woven abrasive material may be somewhat different.

The above is for 3M Scotch-Brite brand.

One of the problems with steel wool is the chinese made stuff splinters super easy and can get embedded in wood, etc. if you are using it for spoonsmithing.

Check out the Scotch Brite pads -

Thanks. I always thought a scotchbrite was just a scotchbrite.

I have some soft, worn out ones, for gun stuff.

Also watch out for the different grading standards for Sandpaper..

HowStuffWorks "How does the sandpaper numbering system work?"

Or not all 600 grit sandpaper is equal..

I, of course learned the hard way... color sanding a fresh paint job on one of my cars.....

I'm bluing more gun parts - kinda fun, so I'm having a blast.
I have done a part to the point of 1200 grit...went to Autozone and got some 1500 and 1800 grit...just for yucks.
Wow! They had 3000 and 5000 grit there. Who knew? I guess for clear coat finishing.
Anyway, I also bought some 3000 just to see what it does.
Then I'll get to the bluing.

Also, got 3 SKSs and having fun w/them.
Now that I'm retired ('08) I don't know how I had time to do my own laundry when I had my business.

Thanks I like to think so. The trouble is I'm about the only person at this stage that thinks that.

Go for it. Are you using the cream or the liquid? The cream is easier to work with. The liquid it hard to control and best used for small stuff, screws and those kind of parts.Put it on with steel wool and an old tooth brush. Follow the directions closely. Card with 00 wool, 5 or six repetitions should get you there. Make sure you treat the parts with RIG or they will rust almost over night. You should try slow rust bluing. It''s easier than you think and MUCH more durable. I know you will figure this out yourself but fine grit is really over kill. polishing to 600 will do nicely.

* use nitril gloves** unless you want blue fingers from the cream. The liquid will absorb into your skin BAD STUFF.**

Thanks, Dave.
I use gloves and cotton balls...am using the liquid. Got great results earlier on barrel and gas tube on the SKS.
The Oxpho -Blue is good stuff...many apps. and the blue is as black as the rest of the gun.
OK, I'll stop at 1500 grit...where I am now.
Thanks.

Looks good! Well done..yes Oxpho is the best of the cold blues. Try the cream as well. Know that cold blues offer little protection though and you have to keep everything well lubed. Carry on brother carry on. when you are ready to try slow rust bluing drop me a line for some of the hot setups.

Dave,
Do you have and use a damp box for your slow rust bluing?
If so, did you build one or buy one?

No I don't use one. My basement workshop is kept at about 50% humidity and it will rust them overnight. A rust box will hurry up the process. Simple to build. It IS called Slow rust blue though for a reason..LOL.

You're a wizard, Dave.
I did find out. I ended up polishing the SKS receiver bolt cover to 1800 grit...and it didn't match the receiver...too shiny and nice.
I took it back down with 220...blued it and it's a much nicer match.

Well, I guess that 1994 6 month course on personality profiling paid off.
Good to see that it was the outercourse and not the other course.
