Fancy hide-a-spoon - covertcabinets

I was looking at cheap wall shelves on Amazon and saw these listed. I thought the folks on the board might find them interesting.

Hide your spoons in plain sight.

Covert *Cabinets - Covert Cabinets

They've even got a serving spoon option

Covert Cabinets are made in America. They can be mounted to just about any wall in any room in your home or office to provide an added element to your defense strategies. Simple installation in as little as 15 minutes gives you peace of mind with security and accessibility. These handcrafted storage solutions are durable and discreet. Once hung on the wall there is no indication they have a secret storage compartment. Items can be placed on the shelves and left there. Items on the shelf will not interfere with your access to firearms or other valuables.

Locks, latches and hinges are hidden from view when the compartment is closed. The compartment drops down from under the shelf. The interior lock is magnetic that requires a magnetic key to access, which of course is included. The storage compartment does not simply drop open, spilling things when you activate the magnetic lock to open. The hinges operate smoothly using a dampener gas spring. However, the hinges do operate quickly giving you immediate access to what is inside.

The multi-layered padded foam insert (with double sided adhesive tape) can be customized to fit whatever home defense items and or accessories you wish to conceal. Storing money, jewelry, or other valuables has never been easier. We recommend watching this short video clip before trying to modify your foam.

I've seen these. Pretty cool. However I wonder if I could get those locks to work in a hurry in the dark?

I think all you need is a magnet, probably just about any magnet would work as long as the poles were oriented correctly.

Yes I think so... ...but my kids would lose the magnet in week 1.... ...and then at 2AM I'm searching the fridge for one strong enough. :)

Do they sell longer shelves that could fit a Cold Steel Katana?

Tactical Walls for similar products. slightly different sizes available. from my understanding a regular kitchen magnet will not suffice, it's some kind industrial strength type magnet.

Well, they've got one long enough for an AR-15 and a couple of big mags, so, year, I think they probably do.

No, have it as a presentation piece, hide it in plain sight over the fireplace

Those are pretty nifty little shelves, way better than the old hollow book trick

red-beard 09-30-2014 03:43 AM

How many hollow books do you need for a serving spoon?

Interesting concept, but I'm not sure I need one...

Tobra 09-30-2014 08:33 AM

Depends on what you are serving I suppose. Mine holds a thirty eight just perfectly. As you say, this is more of a want one than need one sort of situation. People don't even look at you carrying a book.

did they seriously use a picture of a woman wearing a moo-moo as a prop? :D

Kinda pricey (I know I'm a cheapskate).
Timely thread... I had a nightmare the other night that someone broke into the house at night when we were home.
Got me thinking,
I keep my 9mm spoon on the top shelf of the closet right next to the bed, I would have to roll out of bed, slide open the closet, unzip the bag it is in (laptop type bag) and I would have it in hand.
Been thinking of getting one of the small spoon safe with the button combo lock so I could keep the spoon under the bed (can be had at Costco or Turners).

Back the OP, very cool product, I may not a carpenter but I am handy and think I could make something like that for less that $220.

YMMV

Cool, but with kids in the house I want something more than a magnet locking it.

Especially since it looks like the locks they use on those things are nothing more than rebranded Tot Loks.

Translation, you could have keys all over the house.

I hate to be a pain but nothing beats a proper safe.
The thought of having a firearm so easily "available" like this fills me with dread.

Or what would it take to break that shelf open?
... Sure the crooks would need to know what's in there but I suspect an experienced crook would spot that hiding place in a few seconds.

What about a small steel safe hidden and secured inside a cabinet?
One problem though is that it would take a few seconds longer to get the safe open.

I bet you could easily stuff two kilos in there.
