Amazon has a Henckel's press for $109.
A couple of others for around $30.

Very good...excellent - Thanks!
Right around 27 seconds into that video they're cleaning a monster press that looks good, but no mention of it.

Think a potato ricer would work on huge loads of garlic?

At times, I'd be willing to try.

It must not have passed muster

A quick way to peel garlic is to put the cloves in 2 steel bowls and shake vigorously for about 30 seconds.

All cloves will be peeled and ready to go like magic.

I bought this one from Amazon yesterday.
The cost to end my frustration w/my old press is $38. Oh well.
Thanks for all the input on this, guys!

I have the Kuhn. It does work well. And I think it came highly recommended from America's Test Kitchen.

you can put the entire bulb into the bowls (whole).. you have to wade thru the loose skin to find the clean cloves, but it works awesome.

Let the garlic squeezing err pressing begin!

Yep, and if you're just doing a couple of cloves a drink shaker works too.

So, you put two steel bowls together as if they're hemispheres and you make them into a sphere...with the garlic banging around inside?

Pazuzu 10-03-2014 08:34 AM

It takes me about 30 seconds to clean a garlic clove using my fingers, including cutting off the root (my personal preference). It would take me longer to find 2 steel bowls, much less shake them around hoping it worked.

Seems like lots of good energy being tossed after bad energy here.

bt1211 10-03-2014 08:50 AM

Don RO...Yes. Put the whole thing into 2 bowls and shake.

Pazuzu.. no hoping it works, it works. Of course putting them in a steel sauce pan with a lid would have a similar effect, I cook a lot so I have stainless steel bowls on hand.

Nifty. Thanks!

vash 10-03-2014 09:33 AM

i'm not proud to admit i saw Martha stewart do that bowl trick. i immediately set off to try it that very second. it worked awesome. i bet i overshook the bowl and could have stopped it early.

we had 40 cloves-chicken that night..of course i had to go out and buy a thawed bird, and a bottle of wine, crusty bread, a piece of tres leches cake, oh, tomato paste is on sale!..

cooking is fun. probably my favorite household thing to do.
