As close as most of us will get to the cia museum

History, Travel, Arts, Science, People, Places | Smithsonian

Some pretty interesting stuff in here. Apparently, the CIA has a museum, but it's only open to employes, family and I assume a few other special folks.

It's too bad there's not a small section of the Smithsonian for some of the stuff.

On a related note, apparently, the NSA has a museum too, in Fort Meade, MD. And I think it's open to the public, at least, it is according to a guy that I work with.

I'd really like to go to that one one day. My dad was a CTT in the Navy (Cryptologic Technician). The guy that I work with was also a CT of some sort, but in the Marines. He said that the stuff in the NSA museum is probably actually the stuff that my dad worked with. My dad never, even years after he retired, would tell me anything about what he did, which I admire him for. We were stationed in Misawa, Japan twice. Both times, my dad worked in one of the Eschelon installations.

I retired from CIA after 27 years. I always made a point to stop by the museum whenever I was at Langley. The museum is employee-only, but there is occasionally an artifact that's displayed to the public.

Apparently, they gave the Smithsonian a little access and allowed them to take a few photos.

Quote:
Developed by CIA’s Office of Research and Development in the 1970s, this micro unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was the first flight of an insect-sized vehicle (insectothopter). It was intended to prove the concept of such miniaturized platforms for intelligence collection.

Insectothopter had a miniature engine to move the wings up and down. A small amount of gas was used to drive the engine, and the excess was vented out the rear for extra thrust. The flight tests were impressive. However, control in any kind of crosswind proved too difficult. -- T.A. Frail
