I quit smoking (again) using the 4mg gum 9 weeks ago, lost 55 pounds since I quit too, sorry for patting my own back but I find that the consistency of the gum is different from piece to piece from the same pack, anyone else notice this?

Good for you!
I am trying the same remedy to quit the wet snuff for the last month, with the result that I look more stupid than ever with a big snuff under my lip and a constant chewing simultaneously.

Good work, i couldn't do the gum it made my mouth numb. I have one year this week off cigs thanks to vaping. I am blending down now to 0 nic, then to stop inhaling day by day.

Buddy at work - his wife has been addicted to the gum for 7 years.
Is that good? I dunno. Pretty sure it must be better for the lungs. Is there a downside, other than the expense ? Does the gum provide the nicotine-type buzz? FWIW: I do not smoke. Tried it in my youth. Long time ago. Last edited by creaturecat; 10-09-2014 at 08:04 PM.. |

The patch is terrible because it's a consistent stream. You'd only get that if you were a chain smoker. If you are not a chain smoker the patch can really mess with you. Gum is somewhere in between the patch and smoking, you get your nicotine in bursts like smoking but because you can do it anywhere and anytime the intake rate can be different than tobacco. Regulating nicotine intake for tobacco users is, at least for me it was, a fairly big deal and something that required planning and time management. Yes, it takes over your life and sucks. The gum is mad expensive. Pretty much all of the nicotine replacement therapies other than vaping are more expensive than smoking. Maybe because pharma don't view you as a continuity customer so get as much coin from you while they can. Nicotine itself is a naturally occurring pesticide produced by plants so similar to vanilla extract in high doses can be fatal. It is not classified as a carcinogen though there is some suspicion that it may trigger other events that can lead to cancer. Kind of like a stick of dynamite. It does not go boom unless you light it. Think of the nicotine as the match, it lights the dynamite but it in itself does not go boom. Nicotine is by itself beneficial. Think real hard, is your friends wife ADD/ ADHD? It would explain the nicotine addiction.

I used the patch. Worked for me. I was nearly a chain smoker.

Great news and stay away from the stinkies.
I quit 6 months ago by switching to Vaping (electric cigarette). I started on 24mg/ml and I'm now down to 6mg/ml. I Vape about 4mils a day so doing the maths I'm getting about the same as four cigarettes a day. I really think most addictions are about your own "beliefs" more than anything else. The discomfort of not getting your Nic fix is fairly manageable. I recently had the flu and could only mouth Vape for about five days. Well I survived just fine which tells me the dreaded Nicotine doesn't have that hold I thought it did. Just stay the course and good luck.

I quit Copenhagen a couple months ago cold turkey. I watched a Curt Schilling interview & decided I had pushed my luck far enough with tobacco. My blood pressure has dropped 20 points & I don't miss it as much as I thought I would. I'm saving for retirement & want to enjoy it.
My biggest concern since I quit is weight gain. I have a lot harder time controlling my appetite. I'm nearly recovered from knee surgery & have started to run nearly everyday, but am still gaining weight.

I've chewed the gum lots, for me its cheaper than smokes and easy to quit cause it tastes so bad, I had a buddy pick me up some gum to bring to me at work, he lived outside Vegas and the gum was terrible tasting, way worse than the Canadian version but then cigs from the States smell terrible when burning and the taste is bad too (kinda like your beer compared to ours).
The gum is defiantly not healthy, better than smoking but the nicotine does something to the platelets in your blood and make them stick to your arteries, plaque like build up happens, killer after and Angioplasty stent has been added, maybe one of the Doc's can let us know for sure what Nic does but its still not healthy - better than the butts though Nic has always been easy for me to quit, food and something to do with my hands is my problem, I brought out the Banjo to keep my hands busy and went on a drastic diet for the weight gain. I set obtainable goals too, check out you tube - Steve n Seagulls, thunderstruck, I'm not as good as that guy, yet. God hates a quitter but he looks the other way when it comes to booze, drugs, cigs & redheads. Finn
