Video game questions
Hey
Gonna get my son a Playstation 4 but he has also mentioned that he might want the latest X-box. I got him an X-box years ago and it was a bit much for him then but I bought a racing game and was kinda impressed with it, at the same time I was dickin with Grand Prix Legends and that's a great sim, there was also an early version of NASCAR, 2003 maybe that was the best of the NASCAR sims in that series or so I was told but I always considered GPL to be the best, Colin McCrea WRC was also very entertaining. My question would be on the choice between X-box and PS4, he plays a lot of NHL on his PS3 and I'm sure he will want the "4" version to continue but what would be the best unit for racing games? I'm more into the sims as opposed to the arcade style (that's what I call them) games but what would you buy for racing entertainment? What would be your choice for a computer racing game? How does GPL stack up to the newer games? If I'm saying anything wrong here then feel free to correct me. SmileWavy Finn |
I have a ps3......mainly use it for f1, Netflix. ....
I never got into the x box..... Imo once you have one you like better you never go back, i know hardcore users who feel the same way. ..kind of like comparing apple and android. ...... I would find out from your son which he prefers......cause there is going to be a difference lol |
I don't know the answer to your question, but the 14 year old boy in our house has an x-box 360, and a PS3. The PS3 sits, and he really desires the x-box 1.
His grades were straight A's this past 6 six weeks. I hope he keeps it up. Only 12 weeks to go at the current rate. |
You absolutely can not go wrong with Forza 5 on Xbox One. Even Forza 4 on Xbox 360 is fantastic. Steer clear of Forza Horizon as that game is more of an arcade racer and very light on realism.

I've always preferred the Xbox controller over the PS3/4 controller. The controller is a huge part of gaming so that something to consider. I've always preferred the Xboxes but the PS3/4 is very good too, like someone said above its like the apple or android comparisons. The Xbox one was kinda low on features when it first came out but they are constantly updating it and it'll have some amazing features in the near future. The Skype app is incredible on it. It follows you around the room using the konnect sensor. Also the voice commands are great too. Lots to consider, good luck, I'm sure your son will be really happy with either.
You may want to find out if he games online with friends and see what systems they have, if you get him an Xbox and all his friends are on PS 4 he won't have anyone to play with anymore. |
Both are great. go with the one most of his friends are on so he can play interactively with his buddies. I think the PS4 is the superior technology but interactive gaming with friends is my number one criteria for enjoyment.

The big console racing franchises are Gran Turismo on PS and Forza on XBox. Many popular games are available on multiple platforms, console and PC but these are not. Same with things like Halo which is not on PS. It's a good idea to let the software drive your hardware choice. We have always been PS here but are thinking about an XBox for Xmas.

Totally right on the game driving the console, look at the whole Halo francise, I bought an Xbox (one of three I have) strictly because of Halo.
One of my 3 is purely for a racing sim with an older Forza and F1 racing (which is awesome and hard). Like others have said find out what his friends have so he can play with them online if he's into that. I've never been much for online games, but hooked on World of Tanks right now, and love kicking all my friends butts in Madden NFL... |

Just thought I would chime in to say that neither the new xbone or PS4 play older PS3 or Xbox 360 games at this time, so if you enjoy playing Forza 3 or 4 or the older Gran Turismo series games, you will have to keep your old systems. Forza 5 is pretty to look at, but has no Porsche cars (at this time), only a few Ruf cars (some kind exclusivity deal.) Forza 4 had some Porsche content but was an add on pack.
I currently have the new xbone and enjoy the graphics of the new games (COD Advanced Warfare is on my list.) You can also switch between playing a game and netflix real fast. From what I remember, both the xbone and the PS4 have almost identical specs down to the processor and memory. So it seems to get down to just exclusive games to each system and which friends are on which system for multi-player. Some people say that Forza is more simulation 'esque" than GT in that GT cars from GT3 up seem to under-steer more. They are both good looking games and have good tracks. I like Forza 5 but personally like Forza 4 better. GT7 has not been released yet for the PS4 if memory serves me correct. If you are going to get either the PS4 or xbone, think about getting a special edition system tied to some game he likes (they can be worth more at trade in time.) If your son is getting a PS4 you may want to check out the new GT7 when it comes out. Forza 5 for the xbone is fun and looks good. As far as PC games, find an old copy of GTR and have fun. Good AI and the cars are fun to drive and sound nice. |
i am happy to report that i have no idea what anyone here is talking about.
i just never got into gaming (when i could afford to buy into it). i did try the two metal gear games. i gave each console away after finishing the games. to some single mom's kids. kid love them. mom, not so much. |

Metal Gear Solid was a good series but had too many cut scenes (pre-recorded dialog between characters.) Sounds more like you played them on the original PS one system. I like to have more control over the action and watch less. As far as gaming goes, I enjoy the thrill of multi-player on-line. Lots of good games out there now. Red Dead Redemption, Assassin's Creed series and Call of Duty just to name a few. |
Second metal gear was PS2. I went thru two systems. One game each. I didn't spend wisely:).

The new Forza 5 on XBox one is the bomb.
http://compass.xboxlive.com/assets/6...bring%20_1.jpg yep that's turn 17 - just as I know it after 490 laps COD graphics is good - but hopefully advanced warfare is better. Not wild about Destiny - but my 15 year old son is on it with all his friends |

For example: The Power and Glory mod, http://www.gtlw.co.uk/, with Touring and GT cars from the 60s and 70s, including modeling period tires. There is a Group C mod with 962s, Classic DTM, with E30 M3s vs MB 190s and Audi quattros, and a bunch of others. All sorts of tracks: Index of /gtr2/tracks If you like racing simulations, that is a great way to go. On edit, GTR2 is also an older game, coming out originally in 2006, so you don't need the latest greatest monster PC to run it. |
GTR, GTR2, GT Legends (LOTS of Porsche content) and Race 07 are all Simbin and pretty good. Rfactor and iRacing too, but I think iRacing is subscription based. You can get a decent force feedback wheel for not a great deal of money or a great one for a whole lot of money. Most of the wheels work with a PC and PS4. Not so much the XB1. That said, I found Forza easier to drive with the stupid thumb sticks than Gran Turismo.
There was a thread a while back with pics from GT Legends and the Porsche cars. |
Forza 5 has made me consider getting an xbox one, and I haven't even hooked up my 360 after moving in January!
Has anyone driven the TG test track on Forza? And isn't there other TG related content? |
I have the TG track on GT Legends, but it is all old(er) cars.
Forza had great visuals and audio. I just don't want to go out and buy yet another wheel for it. |
