Should I scrap my 1950 VW?

I just got a letter today from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District in San Francisco. They have offered to buy my '50 split for $1000, and they will kindly deliver the car to the nearest scrap yard for immediate dismantling. Since it's voluntary, I think I'll decline.

This thread would not be complete without pics of your VW.:)

As you wish. (Know a good source for the correct bumpers?)

Horrible! They'd be doing you and Cali a huge favor. How do you sleep with that poor old thing in the garage. The sad thing is that if you were an '85 year old lady who's had that sitting in the garage for years since your husband died, you might take them up on the offer.

Do I need to put my post in green so you guys "get it"? ;)

Let me hep you out yo' situation here. I will trade you straight up a 1963 Plymouth Valiant fo do sedan in more or less drivable condition for your politically unacceptable death mobile. With this fine vehicle yOu will experience the magic of the famous touch button 727 transmissifier and the power of the world renounced "leaning tower of power" scant six motivator. I should actually charge you to haul your rolling Nazi gas chamber away, but I know someone, let's call him "Wolfe" who is interested in that sort of thing and I may be able to sell it before the JDL comes for my children.

Good Lord Man! How do you sleep at night with the smog belching beauty in the garage at night! :)

Sometimes my letters don't work. :(

I"m surprised the Kaliforninazi's haven't taken it under the emanate domain laws..

fanaudical 10-20-2014 06:30 PM

Seriously? I've never heard of that program. That's awful.

GH85Carrera 10-20-2014 06:36 PM

I will double or triple CA's offer. 4 grand final offer.

porsche4life 10-20-2014 06:45 PM

I'll go up to 5k and it'll escape the Cali nazis!

john70t 10-20-2014 06:50 PM

Rusty piece of old junk.
And look at those funny windows.

I might offer $5.01K and help properly dispose of that trash as a favor.

A few years back Colo-fornia got rid of our 25 year emissions exclusion...used to be that once your car was >25 years old it was considered a "classic" and if registered as such was no longer subject to emissions testing/requirements...it was the year before my '82 SC turned 25....such luck! Now we have to have the emissions requirements requisite with the year of manufacture. So...all Pre-74 classics for me from here on out!

Cash for clunkers.

GWN7 10-20-2014 06:55 PM

Write them back. Thank them for their offer but as you have been offered $1.2 million for the car you thought you would give them a chance to raise their offer to match or beat the price. :)

Be careful because the Eco hippies have access to unlimited taxpayer monies now. And they just might take you up on it.

aigel 10-20-2014 06:58 PM

The letter also states that if the car is a collector vehicle to please disregard the notice. Of course they can't know or decide which car is a collector and which one isn't. There certainly are a few 70s and 80s 4 door sedans that'd be better off in the junk yard

I always thought this smog stuff was BS - until I moved to the LA basin ..
