French Fries, really.

I eat in fast food places on occasion, whatever is handy. But I wonder about the fries, In and Out definitely have fries sliced from potatoes, Carls Jr fries are sliced from potatoes, but some others, for sure Burger King look and taste like they are a mix shoved through square tubes. There is never a hint of a real potato on them.
I have asked the people in Burger King a couple times about the fries but all I get is No Se.
Any French Fry pros out there"

I miss In n' Out fries. I used to dunk them in a chocolate shake. You used to be able to see the guy popping the potatoes in the slicer.

One of my favorite pubs serves great beer... and fries cooked from frozen... seriously? In and Out can fresh cut fries but they can't be bothered! And this place brews their own beer!

Best French fries are cooked twice.

the worst thing from In/out are the fries. i think they are awful. they need a double fry.

best for me were the old version of the Wendy's fries. the new sea salt ones are alright.

There is no reason why fries can't be yummy, fun and healthy (to a degree). They just try to make them as cheaply as they can and stretch the cooking oil out for as long as possible. Gourmet fries from a nice clean (expensive) place are a joy.

McDonald's fries are the best, IMHO.

I don't partake on a regular basis of course but when I do.....

Now at home I'll make sweet potato fries baked in the oven as an alternate.

What about those jalapeņo fries? What do they call those...Texas nails or something like that?

I like either McDonalds (and only the fries) or Steak-N-Shake fries. Five Guys fries are too soggy and limp.

Bey go'n - I worked at a BK in college for a semester. I rememebr the frozen bag of fries but that doesn't mean they were not processed. Now I have had spuds that lacked flavor. Cheap taters. A nice Idaho russet fried up tastes nothing like a BK frie.

I would say they are taters just low rent.

Have you had one of the Monterrey melts yet? If not I will post the recipe for you to make your own at home.

WB has been the first place I stop when I go to Texas. The In and Out fries are not bad, but the clown is pretty tough to beat on fries, McD for me on french fries. My wife turned me on to the wonder that is, the Fry Daddy.

Three words for you. Sweet Potato Fries

+1 on the in&out fries tasting like crap. And that shows that the rest of them are processed.

I have practically taken fries out of my diet. Not missing them.

Okay man, here goes...

I make them here at home and while they are not 100% like whataburger, they are very close.

You are going to need the following:

*Hamburger buns
*Good quality hamburger
*Whataburger Jalapeno Ranch Dressing (you can put regular ranch dressing in the blender with a jalapeno and give it a whirl or I can mail you a bottle. They sell it here at the store. They also sell the Whataburger spicy ketchup)
*White American Cheese slices
*Monterrey Jack Cheese slices
*2 Green Bell Peppers
*2 Red Bell Peppers
*1 Large Yellow Onion
*1 Large Fresh Jalapeno

First, add a pinch or two of salt to your hamburger, mix and place in the fridge.

Next, chop your onion, jalapeno and bell peppers up.

Saute your onion, jalapeno and bell peppers till the onion is semi
caramelized.

Set this to the side and fry your burgers up.

Once they are done, put the jalapeno ranch on both buns, add your burger meat, add one slice of each cheese and then add your onion, jalapeno and bell pepper toppings. Put your top bun on and enter heaven I will sometimes add a couple pieces of hickory smoked bacon as well. I have tried it with applewood and maple bacon, but I really thought that the flavors clashed. The hickory smoked seems to hit the spot!

And if you are looking for some decent fries that you can make at home, my wife picked up some of the Arbys seasoned curly fries (frozen from the grocery store) the last time we had burgers and they are pretty good.

As mentioned,

In n' Out and Five Guys fries taste boring and soggy because they are made fresh!

To make a real great crispy fry there are quite a few steps involved and it takes more time than a Fast Food restaurant can spare.

As far as McDonalds, well ...

You can watch this VERY CANADIAN video, it's kind of informative. I imagine they Canadian fries have less crap in them than the USA fries.

Oh and no offense to the Canucks, I just thought it seemed very Canadian because everyone was polite and pronounced words correctly, and no one said "ummmmmmm."
