What I find amazing, is that I can drive a total beater for 10 years, and never a scratch, ding, or mishap. Take one of the nice cars out, and it is just a matter of days . You will notice a ding next time you wash it .
Not a new car, but I handed the keys to the boxster to Traci on a Tuesday, morning. I washed the car Wednesday night, and noticed that the bumper is all scuffed to heck and back. She swears she did not do it, so someone must have tagged her in the parking garage .

A friend of mine's daughter bought a new car; she pulled out of the dealership, stopped at the first light, and got rear-ended.

For 10 years, I daily drove a minty E30 that I bought from the original elderly owners that slowly developed "DD patina" over time. Last February I picked up a time capsule black/black E39 5 speed with 42K miles. Mirror finish, not a nick on it, still smells new inside, etc. In my second week of ownership while stopped at a light, I was rear ended by some idiot chick that pushed me into the SUV in front of me. She said she didn't understand why she didn't stop in time because she "she kept pushing the traction control button" as she got closer to me.

What are you gonna do....

Last year I went to open the rear hatch on my RAV4 and couldn't. Plastic bumper guard was banged in and blocking the rear hatch.
I think it was done at Costco parking lot.
It was hot out one day, managed to get the hatch open, and after sitting in the sun I took my heat gun to it, sat 100 lbs. or so on it and it's back to its original config...but has cracks/scratches.
I have a handicap label hanging from the mirror in my Abarth, I just put it in whatever car I'm taking out and park in the retard spots.
Two year old Abarth - zero defects/dings so far.

I think that's why I hesitate on a re-spray. I'll take it out on its first drive and it'll start raining rocks. ; )

It's annoying no matter how long it takes. Came out of work Monday to find a ding on my 1997 200k mile pickup. It kills me the PO drove it for 18 years and left it mint and I didn't make it a year...

My wife had her car 2 days when an idiot in a parking lot hit the gas instead of the brake pining my wife's car between her car and another car that was parked. Our car had 14K in damage and was in the shop for almost 2 months while I made lease payments. This is only half the damage the other side is just as bad

I've been fortunate and never had so much as a fender bender, except for once in the beater I drove as a kid. I do have a slight ding in the driver's side door in my '03 350Z that just happened a few months ago (and I have no idea how...). That's the first one, ever.

My wife/ex-wife, on the other hand...they've made my body guy several bucks over the years.

When I bought my F250 PSD 4X4 super cab long bed in '03, I got about 5 miles from the dealer and took a rock to the windshield which made a nice star right in front of me... the windshield cracked completely across from the star within a few weeks...

The day after I got the truck, a guy backed into it breaking the running board and denting the bed on the passenger side..... Claimed he didn't see me... I was parked when I was hit, and my truck is friggin HUGE..

I bought my wife a new Fiesta. She drove it home and parked in our very wide driveway. She decided to sit in her new car for a few minutes, just to let it sink in. A shabby and dark, big sedan pulled in, right next to her even though there was 25 feet of space, and the Super Size religious zealot with a handful of pamphlets swung her door open and banged it right into the center of the new car's door.

I did not convert to that religion.

There was that blonde sorority girl I met at the beach, gave her a lift home. I think it was maybe day 6 of owning the car.

Bought a new truck on a Saturday in 96. Going to work Monday, I backed out of the garage but noticed the inside door was open. Pulled back in, put in park and hopped out. Well, not park but reverse. The door knocked me down and slammed into the center post in the garage. Took it to the dealer and the body shop guy knew exactly what happened before I said a word.

I had a 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix when I was in high school. It was really nice except for faded paint. My dad liked a paint shop that did fair prep, but awesome paint. We prepped the car for days before taking it over for a respray.

The day I brought it home from the paint shop, my brother's wife came over to visit. She parked her '80 Grand Prix right next to my '72. I was walking down the driveway from getting the mail just in time to see my five year old nephew open the passenger's side door leaving just enough space for him to step down to the driveway. Then he put his two hands firmly on the door panel and pushed with all his might. The impression it left in the driver's side rear panel of my freshly painted car was more of a small dent than a ding. I don't know who was closer to being sick... me or my sister in law.

My buddy got rearended test driving a new car!

Best thing was that the sales guy didn't miss a beat and offered him a KILLER deal on the car, once it would be repaired. LOL!

In a related story, we once had a huge hailstorm at work. Every car outside had considerable dents. All except the few old air cooled 911s we had. Thick paint and stout metal.

New panel van, just back from signwriters. took it to the Renault dealer for first free service.Drove it home;as i was reversing up drive wife said oh you've been in a crash. Rang dealer about my stove in rear door-oh we forgot to tell you. After new door fitted, their attempt to signwrite resulted in them using a different font to all the rest of the signage! My signwriter sorted it and they paid. Never bought from that dealer again, unsurprisingly

I live in Chicago and frankly it isn't worth owning a new car. You can tell a city car from a burb one. Every car in the city has bumpers either dinged or scratched - the burb cars have the dent/dings on the sides.
