Define an Arsenal

of ammunition

Local news was talking about a guy with "An Arsenal of Ammunition". He had 1000 rounds of 9mm. That is like 20 boxes of 50 rounds each. In the old days of WWB at Wal-Mart, that would have been like $100.

Even at todays prices, that is like $230 worth of ammo.

So, what would you consider an "Arsenal of Ammunition" ?

PS: Please do NOT state in this thread, or ANWHERE else on the internet, how many round of ammo you have. Bad juju.

Jim Bremner 10-26-2014 06:54 PM

more than I have. 87 rounds

That's about all the reading required. 1000 rounds is a few good trips to the range.

TV news = dummies.

manbridge 74 10-26-2014 07:28 PM

I have a bazillion rounds in all calibers.

Ie, suck it ye interwebby watchers.

Jrboulder 10-26-2014 07:31 PM

If you were to have purchased a Marlin XT-22 last week, Remington would have sent you 1050 rounds of 22lr as a promotion. I don't consider that an arsenal.

red-beard 10-26-2014 07:42 PM

Violating my own post...

I bought from the CMP a "crate" of .22 LR. 10 boxes of 500 rounds each, many years ago. At the local sporting goods store, these, less than 10 years ago, would go for $7.50 each. More recently, maybe $15 each. Now, you are lucky to spend $50 for 500 rounds.

And still, 5000 rounds would be worth maybe $500...

I lost my whole arsenal in a tragic boating accident. Must be still at the bottom of the Lake of the Ozarks.

I burnt 600 between .223 and .40 today....I keep enough on hand to reload every magazine I have a few times....it's not much...I know guys with 15,000+ on hand...

If you don't need a separate, full size, safe for your ammo, it ain't an arsenal.

Brando 10-26-2014 08:40 PM

An arsenal is any quantity more than 1, by Media definition.

My favorite is when they state a cache of firearms and ammunition. Total: A pistol, a shotgun, 300 rounds total.

I have more than 1000 rounds under my night stand. I don't know how much I have in the garage.

JavaBrewer 10-26-2014 09:03 PM

IMO the media will classify anything over 20 rounds as an arsenal.

FYI I have over 10k rounds of .22lr because it was dirt cheap when I bought it. We go through several hundreds rounds of it everytime we shoot. Come and get it.

Joe Bob 10-26-2014 09:29 PM

Sue Grafton novels, you always cock your Glock when entering a building.

sc_rufctr 10-26-2014 10:39 PM

By definition an Arsenal is a place were guns and/or amunition are stored so if you
have one pistol and some rounds sitting in a draw near your bed it's an arsenal.

It's sound all dramatic so that's why the media like using the term.

The proper use of the term IMO would be a largish cabinet with three or more rifles and
a few pistols. And a mixture of amunition to suit numbering more than 10,000 total.

Yup.

Arsenal - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary

: a place where weapons are made or stored

One may not like it, but that is the definition.

GH85Carrera 10-27-2014 05:03 AM

So I guess even Barny Fife with that gun and a single bullet had an arsenal.

wildthing 10-27-2014 05:31 AM

Arsenal is a football club.

Jeff Higgins 10-27-2014 07:17 AM

You can't win. If your guns and ammo are properly stored, they then become a "cache". And, of course, they will always emphasize that the bad guy showed up with a loaded gun...

FIFY. :D

Amazing how the media skewers the whole ammo / firearms thing...

At least it wasn't a stockpile...

varmint 10-27-2014 01:28 PM

reporters need to decide. are they going to admit to being dullards with poor vocabulary skills? or are they going to admit to using bias incendiary language?

Really? If the OP had asked for the definition of just about anything else and a link to a dictionary was posted, it would pretty much always end the discussion. But, since the definition is asked of a highly debated subject, the dictionary definition isn't good enough. If you look up the definition of a holster, it becomes clear the definitions are not the same....

Holster - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary
: a leather or fabric case for carrying a firearm on the person (as on the hip or chest), on a saddle, or in a vehicle; broadly : a case for carrying a usually small item on the person <a knife holster> <a heart monitor carried in a hip holster>

red-beard 10-28-2014 04:12 AM

I thought he was joking.
