I grew up in a wealthy area. Many kids parents' bought them cars. Some bought them new cars. Some even had BMWs and Mercedes. One kid even had a highly modified 3000GT VR4. I myself had a rusty Plymouth Turismo that I bought for myself.
At my 10 year reunion, there seemed to be a high correlation between kids whose parents bought them expensive cars in high school and young adults who still lived with their parents 10 years later.

If my parents supported a lifestyle that got me an M3 - I'd still be living at home!
All I got was a 1986 Escort. I was out of there before I was 18!

In the case of Jaguars, think of it as a job's program for mechanics... :-)

I drove a 67 Chrysler Newport drop top, man that thing was a blast, I just got rid of it a few years back. It was the living version of the smoke scene from fast times at ridgemont high when I pulled into school.

From the other perspective, I recently bought a nice little used Boxster for my daughter's first car. She drives it to school every day. A good friend of mine owned it, so I know it has been well cared for. She is quite a good driver. Very smooth. Very alert. I'm proud of her because she has learned to drive a manual, which only a tiny handful of the kids in her school can do. She drives it well too, with easy, precise shifts, and a deft touch on the clutch. I want her to have a car that is safe to drive, with good handling and good brakes. It gets good gas mileage. And yes, its fun. That's important too. I want her to grow up with the same love for Porsches I have, and knowing that there is more to cars than just transportation. She's becoming a real enthusiast already. She likes going to club breakfasts with me, and asked me recently if she could enter an autocross with the Boxster.
She actually has two Porsches. A few years ago I bought a 356 C coupe for her, but it is still undergoing restoration. Depending on where she winds up for college, maybe she will have it then, or maybe later, but it is intended for her and she knows it. Of course some day she will inherit a few more. I want her to have the proper appreciation for them when that happens. I drove a '69 911 in high school. I don't think it hurt me any. DG |

Grew up in Newport Beach. New 911s, Bmws, and Mercedes were not uncommon in the HS parking lot. Lived on the have not side, had my $900 Cutlass that I put z28 brakes and front suspension on, my buddy had a 55 Pontiac 2 door HT and the fastest car at school was my other buddies 68 455 Cutlass. One guy in our class had a restored 66-7? 427 4 speed Bette convert that daddy restored. Supposed tire blowout caused it to go bye bye and a new Bronco replaced it. The 455 crushed it one nite, lol. Earliy 80's , 320i Bmws everywhere.

I drove a 944 in HS. The only other Porsche in the HS parking lot was a 914. That 914 eventually broke so I bought it and parted it out. Then I had the only Porsche

I plan on giving my daughter a used Mercedes E350 4matic for her first car. Not because its luxury, and not because were 'rich'. I think its an excellent, safe car, that can take her all the way into adulthood if cared for.

Where I went to high school I don't think there was a Jag, Porsche, BMW or MB in the entire county
![]() There certainly weren't any in the school parking lot. Well, not really a parking lot. We just angle parked on the street. No more than a dozen of us drove to school. Jim

Dave...just curious. I have three kids, 2 of which are young drivers. My son in a 15 year old Jeep Cherokee and my daughter in a late model Hyundai. I can't even imagine what my insurance rates would be if I put either of them in a Porsche of any variety. Perhaps not a concern for you, but are you biting a signficantly bigger bullet for insurance, or is there an angle here I'm not considering? Sorry for hijack. Heck...I started in my mom's 71 Maverick before I could scrounge up enough paper route money to buy a 73 Gremlin (Levi's edition, of course). Soon replaced with a 74 Capri that I loved!

I had a bottle green '78 Delta 88. It had somewhere around 200-250K miles, cracked transmission housing, and ran on 6-8 cylinders. Since it was constantly breaking down and I had a Chilton's book I got an at-home introduction to car repair.
It sucked, but it was better than what some friends had (2 feet) and it served its purpose.
