Big Fitz 1958-1975
39 years ago today.
SS Edmund Fitzgerald - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia RIP crewman. This may not mean much to you that didn't grow up around the Great Lakes. Those that did likely felt a sense of loss along with the families of the crew that went down with her.

"The gales of November"
A few weeks ago while I was gigging at the Bistro in town, a couple asked if I knew any Gordon Lightfoot tunes. They requested "Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald". (I only forgot one verse) Afterward, I had a chance to talk to them. EF was built in the town where the fellow grew up and when they lived along the seaway they frequently saw her pass. Best Les

Fred,
There's a CD on its way to you. It's not Lightfoot, but I hope you'll like it. Best Les

I understood the lyric from that song that I use in my signature when I was in the Navy. We got caught on the edge of a tropical cyclone between the Persian Gulf and Australia. When topside (only went up one time) it was like walls of green/grey water with a sliver of sky overhead. I can only imagine how those men must have felt. Superior isn't a lake, it's an inland sea!

Every time I went up I-75 in my childhood, through Maumee, Ohio coming into Toledo during the Winter, that ship sat under the I-75 bridge near the big grain elevators wintering in a safe harbor.

I grew up in Port Huron, Michigan which is where Lake Huron dumps into the St.Clair River. Seeing the freighters is still an experience when I visit home.
Unfortunately for my kids and wife, I become Cliff Claven-ish when certain ones pass. I tend to try to explain things about the ships that most people probably don't know(or care) about. This event and especially the song still takes me back to when I was 8 years old. My older brother was killed in a car accident on Halloween night 1975. I didn't realize what an impact that and the weeks after would have on me and my parents/siblings. What is even more strange is that my wife was born in September 1975. It's kind of eery to think that while we were going through all the drama, 80 miles away my wife was just a month old. ![]()

Just Sunday afternoon I listened to a recent Stuff You Should Know podcast on rogue waves - they mentioned the ship (and song).
