You set the angle of the base and then pull the stone across the blade at the edge...pretty nifty. I'm trying to set up a microscope jig to take pics at various grits and then the final strop/emulsion polish |
i'm all over this.
i just love and envy the poeple that can drag an knife over a waterstone and get a keen edge. i watched a very cute girl do it at Bernal Cutlery in SF and the sound was hypnotic. she got knives so sharp with a seemingly benign back/forth action. i cant do the back forth thing, i have to pretend like i am slicing the stone. edge is the leading edge. bought a good magnifying glass and i am off. i'm getting pretty good. i took a dull Buck 110 folder and put a secondary bevel on the (wierd) factory hollow grind you find on all Buck knives. my old buck folder is a straight razor. my arms are hairless anyways, but the little i do have is gone..paper slivers..easy. |

Bought extra stones from Congress Tools - much less $$ than any where else. Also, 1,000 & 3,000 polishing tapes. Have a 1' x 4' cowhide to make a few strops. I have a 7x eye loupe that I'm using to view the edge and the magic marker lines that are helpful to monitor angle. Nice rig, I must say. Expecting excellent results once I get the knack. .
