A drive through history.
What a great day.
What started out as a small cars and coffee turn into a history lesson and a cruise down a forgotten historic track. First, a couple of neat machines: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1416197492.jpg Then the owner of this vehicle filled me in on the story behind one of the great racetracks. It is the story about the "race through the forest."http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1416197598.jpg We took off and I found myself in my Carrera 3.0 cruising in beautiful scenery and forgotten history. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1416197678.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1416197692.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1416197708.jpg The pictures do not do it justice. In the last picture is where the starting line and pit lanes used to be. The route we drove (twice) is what used to be "the race through the forest." It was a pebble beach race for the del monte trophy. This race ended in 1956, after Ernie Mcafee fatally crashed his Ferrari into a tree on April 22nd. This was the end of street racing on the peninsula. It was also to be the reason Laguna Seca exists today - what a fascinating piece of history. Btw, no other than Carroll Shelby won the last race. Speaking of, see next post. The day ended in a hanger at mry airport. |
This is a map I found online of the track

Lots of nice gems: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1416198197.jpg Not only is it original, it had celeb history: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1416198237.jpg I now have a picture of my son posing in this car in the same way as McQueen. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1416198332.jpg Get out and drive. What a day http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1416198411.jpg |
Great pic's and story.
What the hell happened to the paint job on that Carrera 3.0? Was it in a fire or something? |
It didn't happen.

LOL
Actually it looks really good :) |
At some point the car will be out back to its original guise, which is oak green metallic. However, for now it is my rat. It is completely restored except for paint. It is a lightweight beast with a combination of rebel and elephant racing suspension. So much fun!
Right now I drive it all I can without any worries of chips etc. |
