Digital Camera memory is cheap
 

I have about a 10 year old Sony point and shoot (8 mega pixel), good for my travels. It had like a 1/2 Gig memory card about 60 pics IIRC. Going to NZ and AU in a few weeks I decided to get a 16 gig card, $10 at Amazon Prime. I also bought a 16 gig micro SD card for my Samsung tablet, another $10, which effectively triples my tablet memory for movies when sitting at airports.

Looking at Amazon I can get a new Sony point and shoot with a 20 mega pixel resolution, a Zeiss lens and a 16 gig card for around $100. I think my Sony Pictures contact could get it for me for 2/3rds of that or around $70.

Ten years ago, IIRC a 16 gig memory card was close to $100.

I can remember when I couldn't justify spending the money to bump my IBM PC-AT compatible machine up from 512k to 640k. The 128k memory upgrade (qty 9 chips, 8 + 1 more for parity bit) was right around $100 or so.

Ten years ago, IIRC a 16 gig memory card was not available. IBM had microdrives in CF form up to 8Gb (thousands +$) Edit: looks like 8Gb happened in 2005

You are probably correct, It was probably smaller than that. I think it was 1/4 Gig. Would store like 60 pictures.

I am still stunned by it all. You can get 128Gb micro SD cards for less than $1/Gb. Yeah, a decade or so ago one Gb used to cost $1k and was slow, in the larger CF format. --micro SD's are the tiny.

New card will store like 2,500 pictures. Camera is actually "Only" 8 years old, not 10. Increased my camera memory by about 40X, tripled my one year old Samsung tablet's memory for storing movies for when I travel and bought a cable to download pics from the camera to the tablet for a total of about $45. I'm happy.

There are big technological advances but also huge subsidies in Asian countries which don't have to worry too much about environmental or workers safety. I find it amazing that a head of cabbage grown in CA costs more than a 16GB memory card ...

Of course it is nice to have practically no significant cost associated with home computing or basic gadgets like cameras, cellphones or GPS. I just wonder who gets screwed half way around the world to pay for it ...

Unfortunately, the really good cards are still expensive. Class 10 and some other UHS-II/III cards that some of us use still takes a bight out of the wallet.

Two thoughts-
1-Disregard quality or speed for the moment but high cap cards in cameras may not be the safe answer for some. Don't count on a 100% reliability card. I've know a few who lost many pics but had never backed them up! I advised them if they're too lazy to transfer or not back-up or copy elsewhere, stay with a smaller capacity. It will force them to get into the habit.

2- Buying based on low cost. Lots of scam packaging being peddled, especially off-brands and Amazon. Couldn't believe it until someone showed me. The card may be packaged, represented as and even read as being a 32 or 64g but in fact might not hold half that.

My dad was in Europe recently and not sure why, but he needed to buy a SD card. Went to what seemed like a reputable shop. They didn't carry the cards he would have preferred, but the lady sold him something that supposedly was Class 10, even had the symbol. It performed at half the speed of the other cards he had. With the Fuji mirrorless he brought to Europe, it can shoot something like 45 frames a sec or so. We tested with the good cards and they were close to what was presented. The card from Europe, not so much.

16/32 is as high as I go for photography, 32 in the GoPro at the moment as well.

We lost 5 days worth of photos in Singapore as my daughter pressed "Delete all" instead of "Delete this one". Went to the famous Sim Lim Square and looked for a shop that could recover them. No problem. One day and 20 dollars later they had fetched 10,5GB data from the 8GB card! WTF?! They had restored pictures from the Christmas party more then one year earlier and much more, which was deleted at different times.

It was a proud day when I put a 10 meg hard drive in my IBM 286. I was really moving uptown then. I think it cost $250.

I have one in my Nikon DSLR. It works "okay" but it's tempermental at times.

To put it simply, the files are not deleted, but rather removed from the 'table of contents'.

With such cheep storage, it's not worth the risk or hassle trying to delete individual pictures using the camera UI.

At a place I used to work, I added 300Mb to one of our servers for $45k

We hung a CD writer on it that was over $10k

I remember getting a 10mg memory for my first Mac. I figured there was no way anyone could use up that much memory!

Which one would this be?

Some older cameras cannot handle SDHC. Might want to check... You will be better off with just a 4GB or two.

I would look into getting a spare battery or two. There is a kit on Adorama (search google for Adorama, I have used them before and they are a good site) for $151 with a spare battery, case, 32 gig card and card reader.

Last year, a client sent me photos on a floppy disk :eek: I had to special order an external reader! She was still using her tried and true Sony Mavica .....

A few relics from my desk drawer. The 100Meg Zip drive was the cat's ass. Also note the 8Meg Memory Stick :D

I didn't have to leave my desk to grab one of these babys. I use them every day. To write notes on. They also make great bookmarks.

Dr. Who doing a promo for PR1ME computer. We used a Prime 300 with 1.5MB disk packs that cost $75. You weren't cool if you didn't have your own disk pack.

Yeha, but I actually have the tape here at my desk here in the office

I have VAX tapes here. The 1.5MB disk pack is at my house. Finding a disk drive to read it would only be slightly worse than trying to find an 8" floppy disk reader!
