I like it with one exception. Why must Mazda place the nav screen "on" the dash instead of in it? It looks like some silly add on. I'm in the market for a new vehicle and I passed on the Mazda 3 because of this (and also because of the silly vinyl interior on all but the top model).

It seems more and more automakers are doing just that - sticking the screen on top of the dash instead of integrating it into the dash. It looks awful.

Benz is doing the same thing, looks cheap to me. I'll stick to using my phone.

Nice looking Mazda

Kind of looks like the Suburu XV Crosstrek a bit. I bought an XV earlier this year, if this was available then I would have looked at it, the CX-5 was too big for what I wanted.

I don't like the looks of the nav screen from the outside, but I sat in a Mazda3 last time I had my car in for service and it really didn't bother me from the driver's seat.

Based on the success of the CX-5, I'm guessing the CX-3 will sell very well. Would have to think that it will be priced below the 5, which is pretty reasonable.

I like the looks of it, and, being a Mazda, it should be quick and lively, and last for a long time.

I can't imagine that thing has great rear viability.

Apparently it is what consumers want. Their CX-5 sells like hot cakes, and other small SUVs are big sellers as well. A lot of people feel safer in a higher car, but they don't want the mileage of a traditional SUV.

Actually it is. We apparently won't buy wagons, but we'll buy wagons with a higher center of gravity, inferior handling, worse performance and MPG. Just call it an SUV.

With that said, it's another damn good looking Mazda. I think their cars are all segment leading.

Having owned wagons, SAV/SUVs, and hot hatches, I am preferring the latter. As long as you don't need to go off-road, this car is winning. Actually has more usable room than the X1.

Yup, I love a hatchback. Which in reality is only marginally different from a wagon, that line is pretty fuzzy.

My quip was only partially serious as I do know people like these, for all stated reasons. My sister-in-law purchased a cx-5 and its literally a bad handling, upright seated sedan. I can't imagine how small/useless this one will be. Her 50lb dog doesn't fit in the cargo area without looking like he's playing Twister while pressing his doggy beard against the glass...but she "loves" it and her $400/mo payment.

To me they're ridiculous, but hey, this is coming from a guy who uses both hands to drive, doesn't talk or text while driving and can fit a wife, her crap, 2-60lb pit mixes, a baby, his crap, 2 sets of golf clubs and my toothbrush in a '01 540i...for a family weekend at the beach :)

And for our Canadian friends, Mazda recently changed their warranty on 2013 and later vehicles - no more milage limits, just time. So what used to be 3 years 36k miles is now just 3 years.

We got a loaded 2012 CX-9 in late 2012 for just over $26k after taxes, etc. Sticker was just over $30k.

The higher the nav screen is, the quicker the driver can change his or her view from the screen to the windshield. So putting the screen up higher makes sense from a safety perspective.

But I agree - even with your cars (I work for MBUSA), the nav screens look dis-integrated from the dash - almost looks like it was put there as an afterthought. The screens in the MB cars are no longer touch screen since it is difficult to reach from a properly seated position - so the controls are integrated into the console area.

fwiw the high screen looks right in the i3. In the Mazda, not so much. Depends on the rest of the interior design. The i3 is different enough that it doesn't stick out as an add-on imho.

That CX3 is a good looking car. Price wise likely good and economical on gas. However I am happy to pay a premium for an suv that sits higher even though it goes through a bit more gas.

So even if it sits higher as long as it is not driven like a Porsche quickly on the twisties then I feel good to go and safer.

Many may dispute this but in my suv I feel safer around some of the idiotic half ton drivers in this city. We have lots of half tons in this city....

I owned the jSW for a few years and there certainly is a difference between that and the GTI. You lose a few inches from the rear with the GTI but still have a lot of storage space. Those inches make a difference in handling and parking. That said, the JSW would fit a lot of stuff.

No magic bullet, but there are good ways and less good ways to maximize interior space while keeping fun and functionality. As for aesthetics, it just depends on what you like. I do find the new Mazdas to be attractive on the outside, but the interior design still leaves me a bit cold. Actually that is the case with pretty much every Japanese interior design..
