Man rescues baby from car upside down in watery ditch - World - CBC News

"A Maine logger helped save an infant from drowning when he crawled into a car that was upside down in water and used a knife to cut the straps off her car seat and pull her out, police said.

The baby wasn't breathing and another bystander performed CPR, reviving the girl, police said.

Leo Moody, 44, of Kingman, was driving home from work Monday when he saw a flipped SUV in a culvert in Kossuth Township, about 280 kilometres northeast of Portland. Moody said he called 911 and rushed to the vehicle.

Moody said one of the SUV's passengers told him her baby was in the back seat, and he swam to the vehicle and cut through seatbelts to free the seat. He said he then took the three-month-old to the banks of the culvert and handed the baby and seat to another passerby, Wade Shorey of Greenbush. Shorey performed CPR on the child, resuscitating her, Moody said."

Excellent work, Mr. Moody. Sadly not everyone would do that.

That's a great story with a fantastic outcome!

Good job to those good sams..........I have no doubt I would jump in for the baby, and do everything possible for the rescue. I just hope somebody else knows how baby CPR should be performed. If, god forbid, something would go wrong and the baby couldn't be revived, I would fear the legal ramifications.

I found myself in a similar situation recently and when seconds literally matter, you just dive in and do your best, do something. As I found out, most wont - or worse - stand there filming with their fkn phones.

That my friends is the very definition of the word HERO.

He risked his own life to rescue some child that he did not know. He is not a trained professional however I don't know how you train to do that type of work besides special forces training in the military.

Someone buy that man a beer! That is a real man and a real hero.

"Any person who in good faith renders emergency care, without renumeration or expectation of renumeration, at the scene of an accident or emergency to the victim of the accident or emergency shall not be liable for any civil damages resulting from the persons acts or omission, except for such damages as may result from the persons gross negligence or wanton acts or omissions."

Wow, that is logical and makes sense! Good law. It is a shame it has to be on the books.

Even more of a shame is that it does not apply to medical personnel.

I bet the first thing that guy did when he got home was apologize for being late. The kind of man who runs into a burning building to help someone. I like to think there are more people like this than I would guess.

I can't imagine NOT going in, but talk is cheap. We'll see what happens when my day comes. Even more, I can't imagine that the people with that baby were standing by.

Earlier today I discussed this news story with my wife. Her first response was, "How could a mother leave her baby inside the car?"
She went on to say she had just listened to a radio program the other day (DNTO on CBC) in which they postulated there were three types of people.
First there are those who see action is needed and do the right thing.
There are people who see action is needed and don't always do the right thing.
There are people who just go into panic mode and essentially do nothing.

Those who remember my post from late August of last year know what kind my wife is.

Here's hoping you have the right kind of person around when the fecal matter hits the rapidly rotating air moving device.
