Residential building code question.
 

What's the code book say about plumbing lines run through footers? All I can find is that the line must be sleeved with a pipe two sizes bigger. 2603.5 in the code book iirc.

My inspector wants an engineers letter on it, but I can find that in the code book.

Any thoughts on this?

That's all I could find. I don't see why you need an engineer's letter, how big is the pipe and where in the footing are you trying to pass through the foundation? New sewer line?

I don't know the specifics in your case, but our plans generally call for footing 10" high by 20-24" wide. If you are talking about the septic/sewer line, (4" pipe?), with 6" sleeve through the footing (6" PVC OD is 6-5/8") you have significantly weakened the footing.

We would typically run the pipe under (with compaction and stone) or over the footing in the foundation.

Is a 4" pipe in a 6" sleeve. The foundation is a mono slab. Rebar is contoured around the sewer line.

Both my plumber and I couldn't find anything.

My inspector said there was a comment at the bottom of the page saying a letter was needed. I don't see it.

As a general rule the Inspector is always right. Yes technically you can challenge him or her to "cite the code requirement" but you're likely to piss them off and then they're going to make your life miserable for the rest of the job. A lot of Inspectors have HUGE egos.

Your call but if I were you I'd be inclined to just give them whatever they're asking for. Pick your battles.

Which code has your municipality adopted and are there any local amendments to it?

He's a good guy. I'm just not sure he's as good as he should be.

It's been brought up because every time I need an engineers letter, I back charge the plumber.
