2011 jetta tdi fuel filter service

Hi folks,

any TDI owners here?

I need to replace the fuel filter and I don't have the tool/scanner to run the fuel pumps to purge the air out of the system after I put the filter cover back on.

On the TDI forum some people say you don't have to purge the system and other people say you do (just to be safe it seems)

I bought the filter yesterday at NAPA but I'm worried that if I open the system the car won't start and it's my only transportation right now that can take me to work.

thanks

otto

Leave it alone or take it to a dealer or trusted indy
It's silly you have to do this but you do

thanks,

time is the problem right now, lack of it

another week running the old filter won't hurt anything and I can take it to a dealer next Saturday

btw I have a 75 R90S and still ride it

I have a 2011 TDI Golf. I take mine to the dealer for the filter change. $115. It is the only thing I don't do myself. The reason is the high pressure fuel pump. If it fails, VW generally fixes it, even if it is out of warranty. I don't want to give them the excuse that my DIY effed up the fuel system. So, my plan is to only have VW touch the fuel system to stay on the safe side. $115 every 20k mi is bearable in my book. The scan tool to do it right is >$300, so it will take 3 services just to amortize the tool - starting out with 36k mile free service that's 100k miles until you get pay back on doing your own service properly.

No matter what you do, I definitely would NOT skip the service purging the system with the proper scan tool.

You sir are a brave man. That is one very expensive fuel system to "try something on".

Glad it worked.

yea, a calculated risk

there are enough people on the TDI forum who say they've done it

after I dropped the new filter in I put in a little too much fuel that I couldn't get the cover on by hand so I used a couple paper towels to take some fuel out. I had to do this three times until I could get the cover on enough where I felt comfortable to use to screws to get it all the way down.

car started up just like it normally does so I think I'm ok

I let it run for a minute and then washed the car and took it around the block

seems ok

I still plan on getting the Ross Tech cable and use their download with my laptop

I still miss my 944
