New Targa Mechanism
Anyone know if it's made by Porsche or a subcontractor? In the past I know suppliers have made things like the convertible hard tops for the MBZ SL's. They seem very reliable - can we expect the same for the 991 Targa?

There are at least two extensive articles on the development of the new Targa mechanism.
#1 is PANO - June/14; the other is Excellence -August/14 Been a while since I read either article, but I know it was developed and engineered at Porsche so its probably made by them, but I don't think either article mentions where it's actually made. Some of the parts are directly from the cab. Maybe a trip to the dealer is in order?! |
All i know is Im going to make some money fixing them down the line.

Fixing them - that's the issue. My cousin is going to purchase a Targa or Cabrio this weekend and wanted to know about reliability. I know in the past with some manufacturers that they have subbed those out.

As for piece parts, very few manufacturers make them anymore. Just look at the next part you replace on a car, odds are it will have the OEM markings as well as the actual manufacturer marks. |
Replacing it would likely be cheaper than the Targa top from a SC or a Carrera. Those are 20k new and have no electronic parts.

Oh yeah That'll be fun to fix
The last 993 targa I did was over 10k when it stripped one plastic gear |
Or this weeks charmer the Cayenne Turbo S giant sunroof thingy (forget what they call it)
The frame is all plastic. It broke where it's plastic welded together, shockingly who'd a thunk it, then leaked GALLONS of water into the interior submerging many ECU's. Fun to fix |
