I made one of these a few years ago with another Pelican. It worked ok, but there were a few issues:
1. Those old style hot plates are impossible to find these days.
2. Large clay pots are quite pricey (I nabbed a couple that my landlord had left laying around)
3. My pots cracked after one or two uses (maybe they were old and not completely dry?)
4. It was hard to seal the gaps between the two pots. I made a gasket out of a 1" log of crumpled aluminum foil, which worked ok.

My brother has the Weber "bullet" Smokey Mountain. I've been involved with at least 2 briskets and both turned out EXCELLENT. We started one at 11:30 p.m when I was there helping him put his new engine in. It kept temp all night and we had to add charcoal in the morning. Nice setup with really good results.

I had big plans to make one welding together some 2" square tubing silk screen frames and stuff some fiberglass insulation in between sheetmetal faces tacked on. Way too many projects but what killed it was the old glue on the frames was as toxic as mustard gas when wire brush grinded off. Toxic like you start grinding and fall to the ground on your first real breath. So probably not so good for a smoker. :)

This is what I'll be getting. A friend of a friend is loaning me a similar smoker, she didn't know what brand, hoping to get it in a few weeks. If my experiments work, I'll get a Smokey Mountain.

I did find a U.S. made Traeger 2 hours away for a reasonable price, that is tempting as well.
