Android 5.0.1

Finally a version of android that does not feel cobbled together.

Always thought my Nexus7 was a snappy little tablet but this makes me like it even more.

Scuba Steve 12-11-2014 02:08 AM

I'm running it on my Nexus 5 and I agree, it's a huge improvement. Photobucket acts a little strange but that'll probably be fixed soon enough.

red-beard 12-11-2014 04:21 AM

How is battery life? It is claimed 5 will reduce power consumption.

Scuba Steve 12-11-2014 06:34 AM

It's true, but I'm a bad measure of by how much power use has improved. My phone is on a charger most of the day because I get little to no signal while at work. At home it seems to last a lot longer though, and I haven't found it completely discharged in the morning.

red-beard 12-11-2014 06:58 AM

The list shows my Tablet will get the update in January/February. Phone April/May! I may be on the Galaxy S6 by then

BlueSkyJaunte 12-11-2014 07:26 AM

I guess I should charge and update my Nexus 7. Haven't used it in months.

Maybe this version of Android won't piss me off.

Brando 12-11-2014 07:28 AM

I've rooted my S4, guess I could do a manual update?

Why not update then sell it? The device will only depreciate.

BlueSkyJaunte 12-11-2014 08:50 AM

It will probably replace the 10" Acer tablet my wife & kids use to play games. That poor thing recently began ignoring button presses.

Besides, in 100 years it'll be worth something! ;) :p

The 2013 7 is one if the best tablet values in years. Quad core with 2gb of ram

Still a better tablet thanost if this years crop

Very desireable

widebody911 12-11-2014 01:22 PM

How hard is this version to root?

So I've heard. I just don't do the tablet thing very well. I type too much, multi-task too much, and like a windowed environment much more than a single-task one.

I have a Lenovo Yoga 13 that I got from work. It's the one computer I use 99% of the time at home. I never use it in tablet mode, but that may be because Win8.1 sucks (and seems to want to enforce a single-tasking paradigm).

Honestly I don't think anyone has yet developed a "meat pointer" GUI that works for the way I use a computer.

Easy,
I rooted my Nexus 5 the same day I installed lollipop, using Nexus root toolkit, instead of the SDK. I then grabbed some files and installed the Ambient display that comes with the Nexus 6, Ambient display works well, except that the wake when you pick up the phone doesn't function on the 5.

One thing that pissed me off was that many of the automatons I had set up using Tasker would not work with 5.0, Ill have to set them up again when he app updates. Smaller App developers are playing catch up.

I have not had to worry about battery life on the Nexus 5 with 4.4 or 5.0. Typically I unplug the phone at 6:00 am and it doesn't get plugged back in until 11:00 pm. After 17 hours of battery time with moderate call and data use, I typically have 25% battery left.

Android 5 has a pretty good interface to toggle between apps.

Multi-tasking

Does Lollipop fix the crippling of the External SD Card? That is the stupidest thing in Android 4.4!

BlueSkyJaunte 02-11-2015 06:12 PM

Dunno--the two devices I have that (finally) updated to 5-point-whatever don't have SD card slots. Even stupider is the way you can't mount the device's internal storage as a USB device without using Android Link or whatever the hell it is. Infuriatingly frustrating.

Frankly after using it on my Nexus 7, I don't give a crap about the update. I spend my time using apps and (trying) to swap between them. The OS just gets in my way.

red-beard 02-11-2015 06:17 PM

Android had been great since 3.0, up to 4.3

Now with 4.4, I can't edit files on the SD card. If I want to store things on the SD card, I have to remove the card and use Windows. Stupid really. It seems that Google is doing this to force people to purchase devices with large internal memory, like Apple.

red-beard 02-12-2015 04:42 AM

I expect I will Root my device and then install CM11 or CM12.

Scuba Steve 02-12-2015 05:21 AM

Good call. I have no idea why Google doesn't support SD storage. It's a huge advantage IMO, unless they're more interested into planned obsolescence.

Google has not said why. It is suspected that it is a security/malware issue. It cripples a major advantage of the Android phones over IOS, the ability to expand the storage for a fraction of the cost.

I'm reading up on the issue and making sure I have a fix before I switch operating systems.

OK - this is fixed in Android 5.0

You get to decide whether programs can access the SD card
