Whenever a major appliance breaks down I give my wife two options:

(1) I'll fix it for free (parts and "labour" included).
(2) SHE can buy a new one (she's an oil and gas exec... she earns a very decent salary).

She has, over the years, reluctantly chosen option (1) so we've had the same POS washer and dryer for 20 years or so.

Funny I overheard her talking to her mother about five years ago after my last repair on our washing machine...."NO!!! We didn't get a new one! Alex decided to fix it again!"

Yeah, optometrist are only twice the minimum salary
