BMW R 80RT - your thoughts?
 
For sale locally - what's the deal on this model?

Any thoughts on value and riding aspects?

Looks to be in good shape. Not sure what the year is. Mileage is 30K. Don't know asking price.

That thing looks pretty rough, Baz. I see lots of corrosion in the limited photos. I'm not a 80's BMW expert by any means, but I don't believe that the R80 is a desirable model. People always go for the R100. I wouldn't think that would be worth more than $1800-$2000.

Well, the R80RT was produced from 1984-1990, could be any of those years.....Back in the late '80s, my buddy had one and we took a lot of trips (Me on a modified Suzook GS1000)......

The BMW is a great machine and dead reliable......It's only rated at 50 HP. so it depends what type of riding you will be doing? Not enough for two-up touring IMO.......My buddy and I were always finding twisty backroads all over the West and Canada......He was was always scrambling to keep up when passing slower traffic......

Price? I think the R100RT is more desirable......I would think 3-4K tops, but just a guess...

Thanks guys. Remember I already own an R90/6....just curious what your thoughts were on this model. It's been sitting out with a FS sign for a couple weeks now so maybe he's asking too much. I didn't call because I wasn't sure if I was interested - I hate tire kickers.

It does have some corrosion, Richard....but for a "driver" I guess not too bad.

Looks pretty clean.

In the title it's showing $3,950.00 but in the description he says $4,950.00, OBO. He must have reduced it?

I was seriously looking at air-cooled BMW twins a couple of years ago. From what I have read, the 80s were smoother than the 100s, vibration-wise.

Prices on these are going up again around here.

GREAT looking bike! I always wanted one, but never pulled the trigger. I don't think you could ever go wrong with something like this!

solid bikes. I have a 1200RT which is what the R80 evoled into. If the price is right could be a nice ride.

Keep in mind, outside of an RS, the most you will pay for any airhead in very good condition is around $3500-$4000. A good clean runner will set you back around $2500. That 80RT is neither. Despite what the owner might think, you're looking at a $1500 bike.

I have both an old BMW R100RS and a newer BMW F800S. I use the F800 to commute to work everyday and it is smooth and reliable. The R100 usually stays in the garage but every now and then I take it for a spin and always come back with a huge grin on my face. Even though it is seldom used it starts every time and can take a lot of abuse.

I would say go for a R100 as you will enjoy the larger displacement and power plus they are more collectible.

I prefer the K bikes. Still retro but a bit more of everything; power, ergo, styling etc.

Buddy has a couple of K's a 75 and a 100. The 75 is a beauty and dead reliable. Plenty of power and rock solid if your going to do the ton.

Sold the 930 last spring and needed something to protect my spot in the garage. 1981 S clone built from an RT. I had a 78 R100/7 and had remembered these big airheads to be a lot like a 911--quirky but a lot of fun to drive/ride. Have replaced the Corbin seat with a stock saddle since this photo was taken.

Well looked after BMWs are capable of interstellar milages.
One of my early bikes was a 850cc boxer......I loved that bike. Not a crotch-rocket by any means, but boy was it fun!
