way off the wall question- Panoz racing wheel for decoration

OK so I'm working on the man cave and one of the ' decorations " I picked up last year is a BBS wheel from a Panoz race car. The thing is like 18 x 12 and I bought it on a whim. My plan is to use it as a ceiling fixture possibly incorporating a ceiling fan and LED lights. So picture this big wheel mounted somehow how on the ceiling with a downrod that would suspend a ceiling fan. Lets get creative with ideas on what this could look like !

A 12" wide wheel is going to make for a pretty thick fixture. Are you going to leave the wheel intact? Or are you willing to just use the face (or cut the wheel)? Then you would have an easier time of mounting the wheel face over the hub of the fan.

Aesthetics of the fan, itself, is personal. But right now I dig the look of (no joke) Big A ss Fans.

Sounds like a cool project!

I agree, sounds like a cool project. Noah has some valid points. Maybe you could recess the wheel into the ceiling somewhat. Those Big Ass fans are really cool!

The plan is to use the wheel as is. I'm thinking maybe LED rope light around the perimeter of the wheel then have a down rod through the center for the ceiling fan. So if mounting at the peak of the ceiling this bad boy would project down about 14 " or so.

If you are planning on keeping the wheel whole, it may look better with a race tire mounted on it.

Instead of a rope light, how about drilling a few hundred tiny holes in the barrel (and maybe the face) of the wheel, then lighting the interior of the wheel in such a way that the only light that escapes is from those tiny holes?

I like that idea ! Maybe drill holes in the rim bead and install LED's in each hole ? This is strictly for decoration so no idea too far fetched !!!

Ceiling Fans, Fans & Ceiling Fans With Lights | Rejuvenation

I have never purchased anything from Big Ass Fans, so I have no idea how customizable their stuff is (though I'd imagine it would be, given that they're $$$).

Another option is a store called Rejuvenation. I was in their store today and have purchased lighting fixtures (though no ceiling fans) from them in the past. Very customizable. They have a line of ceiling fans, now. Customizable rod lengths. They are based in Portland, OR, but have some brick and mortar stores, too. And for Herr Oberst's suggestion for poking hundreds of holes in the wheel barrel and lighting from the interior, you can check out some of the mid-century modern lighting fixtures from Rejuvenation for a similar idea they do (though on a smaller scale than a race wheel).

edit: OK, I've sent you on a bit of a wild goose chase. Looking at Rejuvenation's website, they don't have a dedicated category for all their mid-century lighting. So type in "Galaxy" or "Corona" into their search feature for the lamp shades I'm thinking of.

Yep that's the look I'm after except I'm going to have a down rod going through the wheel center to hang a ceiling fan from.
