Massive XBOX fail

Xbox network down (as I hear PSN is down too).

It's as almost if every year when 8 Billion people activate their new device it comes as some surprise to these companies. Wait, you mean EVERYONE that bought a console in the last 3 weeks is going to turn it on Christmas morning?

We thought the last 10 years when that happened were just a fluke.

FAIL.

Gogar 12-25-2014 01:10 PM

The cost of overbuilding it for just this one day far outweighs the cost of addressing complaints. So, the network goes down.

How many people will stop using the device or the service because of this temporary outage, on one day? Not many.

So, the network goest down.

You knew this already though, I know. Merry Xmas!! :)

Maybe it's North Korea?

True. North Korea is a day behind us, so they were opening up their XBoxs yesterday and trying to get them connected.

I can't do green on my phone.

i'm no computer guy but isn't Christmas morning and everyone activating games at the same time sort of a non malignant DOS attack?

cstreit 12-25-2014 07:10 PM

Well there is a group claiming responsibility for it. So I suspect it's both. Doesn't seem to be any motivation behind it other than "because."

Absolutely! In this case, they may have evidence that it's not, I don't know. But I have been privy to companies effectively DDoSing themselves with similar behavior. Got a bunch of equipment that talks to a central device, something happens and all of the equipment decides it needs to talk to the central device all at the same time, poof, central device (or devices) tank and it takes a few hours to get everything working again by making all of the devices talk in small groups.

Brought to you by the Lizard Squad.

I asked my son about this.

He just shrugged and said that's not surprising considering the extra load just after Xmas.

Sorry, it was me... I tripped over the cord.

Then early
Issue here is the DRM they've added. Can't play a game you own without being online. Their network down?, no one gets to use their Xmas present.

If you like your online game plan, you can keep your plan.

intakexhaust 12-27-2014 12:28 PM

That's why they call it X Box :D

pavulon 12-27-2014 01:05 PM

Our xbox online gaming came back to life on Christmas afternoon. I didn't consider it to be a crisis.
